International Talk

Beitrag von Keswick (Contributor) »

I think I open a thread for international talk about everything you like, including questions about people's countries, language etc. What do you think?

It is always interesting to get to know about other cultures and people. We can all learn from each other, so take the chance and ask people about their countries and cultures. Erase prejudices, be curious.

But remember: be polite!

Where abouts are you from if I may ask?

I originally come from Franconia - do you know where that is? Pretty much in the middle of Germany (Franken). But I have been living in the UK for a couple of years.

Ah yes. So do you speak any Franconian dialects?

Arminius, concerning your question whether I speak any Franconian dialects: yes, proper Lower Franconian :D .

Is that similar to Dutch or is it more like Plattdietsch?

No not at all. If you google Unterfraenkisch you might be able to find some sound examples.

Ok, it's a division of East Franconian. I searched wikipedia.de for "Unterfränkisch". I think some of the dialects, especially those around Bavaria, sound neat. :D

Franconian unfortuantely does not at all sound like Bavarian. Hard to describe really.

Hehe^^ Very cool thread! I have my roots into Saxony and yeah... I have a pretty hard dialect. Some of my fellows say to me: can you translate what you are saying into your dialect? We can't understand you. That sounds a bit oddly for us! But I also speak into real high german for a better understanding. :D

I took an intro course on German dialects. It was really cool, but unfortunately they all seem to have blended together.

It must be Bavarian then that sounded neat to me. I believe it has the MHD diphthongs.

Do you have much exposure to Danish since you are in the north?
