speak oder talk

Hallo zusammen,

folgendes hat mich neulich beschäfftigt:

was ist eigentlich der genaue unterschied zwischen to talk und to speak? bzw wann verwendet man welches wort?
gibt´s da ne regel?

Also wenn man eine allgemeine Unterhaltung meint, sagt man "talk"

=> They talked about this and that.

Wenn etwas besprochen wird, benutzt man speak.

=> They spoke about what will happen on the weekend.

Ansonsten würde ich sagen, dass "to speak" formaler ist als "to talk".

=> Could I speak to Mrs Smith, please?

my Webster says:

speak and talk are generally synonymous, but speak often connotes formal address to an auditor or audience
who will speak at the dinner?

and talk often suggests informal colloquial conversation
we were talking at dinner
