Being tired of the dreary wet weather of the 1930s in England, the Durrells decide to pack up and move to the Greek island, the island of Corfu. Lead by Lawrence, Gerrald‘s eldest brother, and support by their widowed mother, the whole family move into a series of villas.

With the help of justify demanding taxi - driver Spiro, who has something of a soft spot for Mother, the family overcomes the most of the troubles.


While Gerald explores the glorious landscape, the wildlife it has to offer and befriends the local population, his Mother has other ideas: fearing her son is growing too wild, she decides that he receive an education.

At least he has to manage his time between his lessons, expeditions to the wild beauty of Corfu and family adventures.
