TOEFL: Übungstext bitte überprüfen

Beitrag von eeboot »

Hi,

"Distance learning and online computer classes should replace classroom learning"
(Do you agree or disagree, give specific reason)

For the classic purpose of education the students usually have to be at fixed point of time at a fixed geographical location which is the class room. In those classes the students are surrounded by their fellow classmates with whom they work in a team and can ask a question which is definitely one of the advantages of classroom learning. Questions that come up during the class can be addressed to the instructor directly, if the single student or the working group cannot answer it.

A disadvantage of classroom learning is that dependencies to the location and the fixed schedule when lesson is performed. That forces the student to organize himself in a way that he is capable of participating regularly in the lesson. If the students cannot participate in the lesson they have a hard time to catch up missed topics and gaining the knowledge by their own relying on information provided by their teachers or fellow class mates. Additionally, exams are usually also set to fixed date where the subjects knowledge need be learned and available.

This latter aspect is sure the biggest disadvantage of classroom learning which makes this kind of education unsuited for people who are interested in further education besides a full time job where overwork are not unusual. Distance learning and online classes are offering a suited alternative to this classic method of education. In distance learning courses the students decide for the own when they learn and study and can organize themselves without being forced to be at certain locations at a fixed point of time. Usually the students are free to decide when the take an exam which gives them the needed freedom to perform studies besides a full time job. If feedback or questions are present which cannot be answered distant learning usually offers the possibility of contacting a tutor or an instructor using different internet communication media. As disadvantage needs to be mentioned the demand for self discipline and self organization skill otherwise the distance learning will not lead to a success. These soft skills are sure some which are gained during the classic education in the classroom.

Therefore, I disagree with the statement that distance learning should replace classroom learning. As stated above, both education concepts own their pro and contra argumentation. Especially for people in the children / teenager age the classic classroom learning is the only suitable way of getting education, because skills like self discipline and self management are usually not developed far enough to make an appropriate use of the distance learning concept. For the later education beside a full time job, the distance education offers a great value to offer further education to everyone who is interested in doing so. Both concepts are important and should co-exist.
