Hi friends.

In unserem Englischkurs an der VHS haben wir folgende Hausaufgabe aufbekommen.
Thema ist die Ölkatastrophe im Golf von Mexiko unter Verantwortung der britischen Ölcompanie BP.
Wir sollen nur wenige Sätze schreiben. Wichtig ist, die Aufgabenstellung richtig zu erfassen und darauf angemessen zu antworten.

Die Aufgabe:

President Obama asked BP's top managers to come to the White House .
If you were the president, what would you tell them ?

Hier meine Beantwortung mit der Bitte um eine Korrektur :

I would tell them it's not only their job to make big profits. Furthermore I would tell them that they are carrying a lot of responsibility. Responsibility for the people who are working for their companie. And responsibility for the nature they are exploring. I would point out, if they are not willing and capable to fullfil this responsibility they are a failure at their poste and they should retire.

I would tell them it's not only their job to make big profits. Furthermore, I would tell them that they are carrying a lot of responsibilities. Responsibility for the people who are working for their company. And responsibility for the nature they are exploiting. I would point out (that) if they are not willing and capable to fullfil these responsibilities they are a failure at their positions and they should retire.

schöne Aufgabe, prima gelöst.
Aber eine Frage: solltet Ihr in der direkten Rede antworten? Dann hättest Du den Einleitungssatz "I would tell them..." weglassen müssen und etwa so beginnen: "Ladies and gentleman, it is my duty as President of the United States of America to make sure that you understand your responibilities. They lie in..."

Wenn es aber eine indirekte Rede sein soll, dann musst Du bedenken, dass Dein Einleitungssatz "I would tell them..." hier in einer Zeit der Vergangenheitsgruppe steht (diese umfasst das Past, Past Perfect + Conditional 1 + 2). In diesem Fall müssen die Zeiten in der indirekten Rede dem backshift unterworfen werden, d.h., sie treten um eine Stufe in die Vergangenheit:

"I would tell them (that) it was not only their job..."

Eine Ausnahme von der backshift-Regel bilden nur die Sätze, die allgemein gültige Wahrheiten vermitteln, wie:
"He told them that the earth moves around the sun."

Magst Du das selber noch einmal korrigieren?! Vielleicht schreibst Du ja sogar zwei Versionen, eine in direkter und eine in indirekter Rede. Gute Übung! Und Du bist ja ein Fleißíger! Ich habe Dir die anderen Fehlerlein verbessert.

Das mir das mit den zurückgesetzten Zeiten in der indirekten Rede passiert ist, dafür könnt ich mich in den Hintern beißen. Damit hab ich mich schon des öfteren beschäftigt.

Das mir das mit den zurückgesetzten Zeiten in der indirekten Rede passiert ist, dafür könnt ich mich in den Hintern beißen. Damit hab ich mich schon des öfteren beschäftigt.

Fein, Manfred, und ärgere Dich nicht, so etwas muss sich erst einschleifen, man vergisst so manches, was man eigentlich völlig verstanden hatte. Insgesamt ist Dein Englisch echt prima!!!

Mein Vorschlag, aus dem ersten "responibility" einen Plural zu machen kam daher, weil Du danach zwei resp... aufzählst. Somit würde ich diese jeweils im Singular lassen. Wenn Du wolltest, könntest Du "people who are working" und "nature they are exploiting" schreiben, weil beide Dinge ja auch für die Gegenwart gelten: die Leute arbeiten noch für BP und die Umwelt wird noch ausgenutzt.

Hi Duckduck.
Jetzt hab ich etwas noch nicht verstanden.
Ist das was du mir mit grün markiert hast optional oder ist das eine Grammatikregel?
Ich dachte daß sich das "were" noch auf das "I would tell them "bezieht und somit ebenfalls in der Zeit zurückgesetzt werden muß.
