May I add a little thing? I've always told to my little children (4-8 years) sentences like this:
I have a cat. I don't have a brother. - for example
But now the teacher is teaching them to use 'have got' . I am just their unskilled teacher for extra lessons or the kindergarden.
At least they are clever enough to accept different ways to express, but at first they were upset.

You can tell by her name (that she's not German etc.)

To express posession you can use both a simple "have" or "have got". Have got is more widely used in the United Kingdom especially in England. Both expressions are understood by all English speakers and I have never yet met anyone who'd use "have got" exclusively. I have even heard both forms being used in the same sentence like in, "I don't have a car but I've got a motorcycle."
