Afloat in the Ocean, Expanding Islands of Trash
In the middle of the Pacific Ocean far away from any nation boundary there is a big garbage patch. In a swirling current pieces of plastic get collected.
For example popsicles sticks, toothbrushes, bottle caps and a lots of other things.
The most common trash is plastic. The problem is that plastic is so omnipresent, it is everywhere. For humans it is very useful that it is so durable and light, but for the nature this advantages are quit harmful. This trash gets often washed into the sea by storm drains or heavy winds. About 20% from the trash is from seamen’s.
Scientists say that this garbage patch doubles his size every decade and now it is as big as texas.
One Other problem is that plastic absorbs often toxic chemicals. A lots of animals tried to eat that plastic and the researcher found in the tissues from the fishes in the near of the patch many toxic chemicals from the plastic. They also found tiny pieces of the plastic in their stomach. Simple said they researchers want to know how toxic it is to eat such fishes.
The scientists say that when a larger fish or a person eats such a fish it could be that toxic is transferring in his own tissues. If you often eat such multiple food source the toxic could accumulate in your own body.
The only way to minimize that problem is to reduce the plastic trash. For example one way could be to recycle more of the plastic. Another smaller part could be used for heating. But in our days everybody is happy if the trash disappears and nobody thinks about it.
Also the problem is that we don’t know exactly what to do with the trash. And because of the different types of plastic there is a problem with the recycling.
