When and Simple Past Tense

Hello!
Could you explain to me the meaning of the next sentence? "I got an offer for college I applied in January when I dident have a job" Does it mean, that a person will apply in any case or only if it doesn't have any job? I wonder at simple past tense, because I know that this person want to do it next year.

Could you explain to me the meaning of the next sentence? "I got an offer for college I had applied to in January when I didn't have a job" (Dies wäre eine Möglichkeit, wenn es sich um eine Handlung in der Vergangenheit drehen würde.)
Does it mean that a person will apply in any case or only if they don't have a job? I wonder at the simple past tense, because I know that this person wants to do it next year.

ich lese den Satz hin und her und komme nicht darauf, was genau ausgesagt werden soll und wie das dann auch noch zu Deiner Information passen soll, dass es sich um eine zukünftige Handlung dreht!?

Über eine Handlung in der Zukunft wird generell nicht im Past Tense gesprochen, sondern im Future Tense, das ist doch einsehbar, nicht?

Den Satz hätte ich jetzt so verstanden, dass von einer vergangenen Situation erzählt wird:
"Ich bekam ein Angebot fürs College, für das ich mich im Januar beworben hatte, als ich arbeitslos war." s.o.

Eine andere Möglichkeit wäre dann noch, dass es sich bei dem Satz ursprünglich um einen Conditional gehandelt hat, der irgendwie "abhanden gekommen" ist:
"If I got an offer for the college I applied to in January and didn't have a job by then, I would probably change my plans and start studying there...".

"Wenn ich ein Angebot von dem College bekommen würde, für das ich mich im Januar beworben habe und dann noch keinen Job hätte, würde ich wahrscheinlich meine Pläne ändern und anfangen, dort zu studieren."

Was Anderes fällt mir so auf die Schnelle auch nicht ein!

Could I ask you here about another sentence? "We have a lot of reading to do." Is it an idiom? Is it better to say "I have to read a lot"?

Hallo Chloe,
beide Varianten sind möglich, auch die erste ist ganz gebräuchlich im Englischen, Du kannst sie also ruhig verwenden. Im Deutschen funktioniert sie aber nicht so richtig:
"Wir haben eine ganze Menge Lesen/Putzen/Feiern zu erledigen." "Wir müssen viel lesen, putzen, feiern."
