Alex is a 16-year old boy from Portland Oregon. He feels attracted to the rough downtown skater scene. But he is from one of the city better neighborhoods. Some weeks ago Alex and his friend Jared wanted to check out Paranoid Park. Paranoid Park is a skate park in downtown Portland under the Eastside Bridge. It´s a place for teenager which had an unstructured live. There aren´t rules and adults and you don´t have to pay to skate because it´s an underground street park and nobody owns it. In the park is a sketchy vibe because it´s a street kid hang out and there are lots of beer cans and garbage. Skating in this park is an accomplishment. And because of that Alex had assumed it was out of his league and he was also kind of psyched. But last summer Alex and Jared skated ever day. He was Alex teacher and the best skater at their school. Alex wasn´t on Jared´s lever but he was learning. In the park they carried their boards up the dirt hill and ducked through a hole in the chain-link-fence. Alex was very surprised. He had often seen hard-core skaters but he had never seen them all in one place. Alex watched a scrawny guy with two huge tattoos and a big scar across his stomach. He was great. Alex thought that Paranoid Park was the center of the true skate universe.

Because of that Alex had assumed it was out of his league and he was also kind of psyched (do you mean to imply apprehension, or enthusiasm? "Psyched" is used for the latter. If you mean he was enthusiastic, you would say "but he was also kind of stoked". For apprehension, "Psyched out" might be closer, but I think it would sound slightly awkward here) . But last summer Alex and Jared skated every day. He was Alex's teacher and the best skater at their school. Alex wasn´t on Jared´s level but he was learning.
