can not or cannt

Hallo zusammen, ich habe mal eine Frage. Ich kenne die Schreibweise cannot des Hilfsverbs can in der Verneinung. Kann ich nicht auch can not auseinander schreiben? Ich bin mir da nicht sicher, denke aber schon das es geht.
Wäre schön, wenn jemand die Regel kennt.

I found this on askoxford.com:

Both 'cannot' and 'can not' are acceptable spellings, but the first is much more usual. You would use can not when the 'not' forms part of another construction such as 'not only'.
