Question for our British members

Beitrag von Pennsylvanian »

I recently wanted to know the translation of the word "stove" in the German language, so I searched for it on dict.leo.org. The listing that, I expect, refers to the most frequent use of the word is "der Herd", but as you can see if you view the page yourself, it notes that this usage is primarily American. Is there another word that British people use or do you use the fully qualified "kitchen stove" whenever you want to cook something?

"England and America are two countries separated by a common language." - George Bernard Shaw

Sorry, Pennsylvanian,

I'm not British, may I answer still?

My friends from England always call it "cooker".

I don't trust these things by the way, always try to keep away from them. Seems to be an instinct...

I'm not British either but I noticed the use of hob here in South East England. :)

the hob - der Herd / die Herdplatte
the four-burner hob - der Herd mit 4 Herdplatten
the ceramic hob - der Induktionsherd / das Keramikkochfeld

the gas cooker - der Gasherd

less often used:
the gas hob - der Gasherd / das Gas-Kochfeld / die Gas-Kochmulde

Gas hob with single pipe feeding gas to the various burners -
Gaskochfeld mit Einzelgaszuführungsrohr zu den Brennern

5-burner gas hob inclusive wok burner, 120 l oven with spit -
5-Flammen-Gasherd (inclusive Wok-Flamme), 120 l Backofen mit Drehgrillvorrichtung

In the Northeast you either use hob, stove or cooker.

Haha, I never heard anyone say "I'll cook some spagbol on my 5-burner gas hob inclusive wok burner, 120 l oven with spit" :big_thumb: .

Sorry.. :out: .
