Number1.
What you know about the caste system in India?
The caste system in India to which a person belongs at birth and which is ranked against other castes has the structure.
- Priests an scholars (Brahmans)
- warriors and rulers (Kshatriyas)
- merchants, farmers and traders (Vaisyas)
- laborers, including artisans, servants and serfs (Sudras)
- people of no cast, the Untouchables, “Children of God” (Harjans)
Number2.
What does the term "untouchable, denoting a particular social group, imply?
The term untouchable contains a highly problematic one in that implies the “looking down” of a high caste Hindu on a person outside society. Also the untouchables are discriminated.
They are considered “unclean” by higher caste Indians. The people in the higher caste think that if they touching the untouchables would render these members of higher castes “unclear” as well.
Number4.
How are the characters described?
-Velutha:
Velutha Paapen is the son of Vellya Paapen.
He is a young boy and a Paravan. Also he is poor and a son of a servant family. Velutha is the Lover from Ammu. His affair with a girl with another case is a shocking breach of social taboo. Therefore he is very brave, because to have an affair with a girl from another case is very dangerous.
- Ammu :
Amuu is the daughter of Mammachi.
She has twins their names are Rahel and Estha.
Ammu has a love affair with an untouchable. She is very brave, because to breach a social taboo and loves an untouchable is dangerous.
-Pappachi and Mammachi:
Baby Kochamma are the parents of Ammu. They discriminated untouchables, because they are from another caste. They were not allowed to touch anything that untouchables touched. Therefore Mammachi is shocked at the moment at which Vellya Paape went to Mammachi and tells her that he sees Ammu and Velutha in a boat together.
- Vellya Paapen:
Vellya Paapen is the father of Velutha Paapen. He is a Paravan and a poor servant. He loves his son and he has to fear him, because he loves a girl from another case. Also he cannot understand it.
-Estha and Rahel:
Estha and Rahel are twins. They are the childrens from Ammu and the grandchildren from Mammachi and Paapachi. They learn from their grandparents how the Paravans are discriminated. Mammachi tells them for example how the Paravans are discriminated in her girlhood.
Number5
Sum up the first paragraph on p.20 in your own words.
The first paragraph on page 20 ll. 1-25 form the text “The God of small Things” by Arundhati Roy is about the discrimination of Paravans. Velutha the narrator of this text is a Paravan he works with his father. They deliver the coconuts they had plucked from the trees in compound. But Pappachi a person from another case would not allowed Paravans into the house.
Also the Paravans excluded from society. The Paravans were expected to crawl backwards with a broom, sweeping away their footprints. So that the other cases would not defile themselves by accidentally stepping into a Paravans footrpints.
Also other cases were not allowed to touch anything that Touchable touched.
The Paravans, like other untouchables, were not allowed to walk on public roads. They had to put their hands over their mounths when they spoke….
That’s the reason why most most of the untouchables converted Christianity to escape the scourge of untouchability.
Analysis
Number 6.
Vellya Paapen the father of Velutha Paapen is shocked as he sees his son in a boat with a girl from another case. The girl named Ammu. Vellya and his son Velutha are Paravans. That’s the reason why Vellya is shocked and has fear.
To have a love affair with a girl from another case is a social taboo in India and it is dangerous.
He goes to Mammachi and has fear. He trembled his own body like a man with malaria.
As he tells Mammachi that he saw Velutha with a girl from another case she is also shocked.
Not just Mammachi and Vellya are shocked also Baby Kochamma is shocked because it is breach of social taboo. That will be clear in line 64-66 “How could she stand the smell? Haven`t you noticed they have a particular smell, these Paravan?
Baby Kochama and Mammachi are from another case as Vellya and his son Velutha. That’s the reason why all these people are shocked. A love affair from two peoples who are from difficult cases is prohibited (verboten).
The mother of Ammu, Mammachi and Baby Kochama cannot understand why Ammu takes the risk and loves a people from another case.
Also Vellya cannot understand it, because it is big problem.
What is Baby Kochammama`s response and its religious implication?
Baby Kochamma`s response is the sentence “How could she stand the smell? Haven`t you noticed they have a particular smell, these Paravans?” (line 64-66)
Here will be clear that Kochamma cannot understand why Ammu can love a Paravan. They are smell.
She is shocked and shuddered theatrically, like a child being force-fed spinach. She is religious and for Kochamma and also for all other people from this case it is a taboo to loves an untouchable.
Which role does the narrator play in this context? Give proof, quoting from text
The narrator Velutha plays a very important role in this context. He is the reason why all these people are shocked.
He is an untouchable person but he loves a girl from another case. He has not fear. That will be clear in ll. 41-44. When Vellya sees his son and Ammu together in a boat. If Vellutha has fear he would be carful and does not spend with Ammu time in a boat where everybody can see them.
He does not think about the consequences and take the risk to love a girl from another case.
Number7
Analyze the image of broom and footprints as it is presented in the text. What does this suggest about the changing role of untouchability in society?
In this passage will be clear that the Paravans were discriminated. The caste system excludes a whole group of people from society. The people were not allowed to walk on public roads, not allowed to cover their upper bodies not allowed to carry umbrellas. It is very sad to read that a group of people are excluding. Also it’s sad to read that the people have no chance to life free.
Mammachi says also that the Paravans in her girlhood were expected to crawl backwards with a broom, sweeping away their footprints. So that the other cases would not defile themselves by accidentally stepping into a Paravans footrpints.
However other cases were not allowed to touch anything that Touchable touched.
Mammachi tells her grandchildren from her girlhood and the discrimination. This suggest about the changing role of untouchabilitys in society.
To tell her grandchildren from Paravans and their discrimination she must tell from the background, because the discrimination has decreased (hat abgenommen).
Also most of the untouchables converted Christianity to escape the scourge of untouchability.
Number.12
Why the caste system should or should not be abolished.
In my opinion a caste system is a social division from the India people. That’s why I think it should not be abolished.
It is not fair to say that is an untouchable I may not touch him. I hate discriminations and I think if in a country are so many castes that lead to discriminations.
Also I think that a caste system control like a religion control peoples. The people are curbing. They must make that what the caste system says and they aren’t free.
A caste system has many consequences for the Indians.
The consequences for the Indians are for example that they have to marry within their own caste.
They say where the people have to live. What occupations they engage in. And also the caste system excludes a whole group of people (Untouchables) from society.

Schade, tanijan,
