Summary
The book “Are you experienced” by William Sutcliffe deals with young people on a gap year between school and university.
David, the skeptical British narrator of this novel, who just wants to sleep with Liz, his best friend`s girlfriend travels with Liz to spending three harrowing and thrilling months backpacking in India the summer before starting university.
The best friend, James, brags (prahlt) about his upcoming (bevorstehnde) trip to various Third World countries and once he departs (abfährt), David and Liz become uneasy (unruhig) friends and quasi-lovers, planning their own journey to India.
But at the beginning Dave and Liz doesn’t like to travel anywhere.
James wants to go on a world tour with his school friends.
His friends call David a coward, because he doesn’t want to come with them. He will go to work in Switzerland for a month.
Liz will not go with James and his school friends, because she wants to visit a special course in university.
But after the work in Switzerland Dave comes back and Liz is finished her curs.
That’s the reason why Liz and Dave agree that they travel to India.
Dave travels to India with Liz because he thinks he might be able to get her into bed. Liz travels to India with Dave because she wants a companion (Begleitung) for her voyage (Resie) of spiritual self-discovery.
It doesn't take Dave long to realize that he's made a terrible mistake. He can't handle the heat, he can't stomach the food, he's depressed by the poverty, and he hates the other travelers.
It also rapidly dawns on him (rasch Licht aufgehn) that he hates Liz.
Liz, however, loves India.
Once there, David is shocked, because India. There are many people and it is like to stepping into an oven. Also he doesn’t likes that there are so many poor peoples.
Also Dave und Liz are fighting often.
When Liz falls for Jeremy, a rich, self-righteous poseur, David is annoyed but takes "J's" advice (Ratschlag) to travel from Delhi to Manali, where pot is cheap and plentiful. Jeremy shows up there, too, directing everyone to the "real" India, complaining about the "two-week" tourists who ruin India for honest, caring travelers like himself. David finds decent company with an Anglo-Indian named Ranj, who's running away from his wealthy, prominent family. Meanwhile, Liz ditches David to join an ashram, and while David is disgusted by Liz's hypocrisy and fed up with her cultish karma-chasing attitude, he's soon confronted by his own folly. Traveling solo, David meets a journalist whose hostile diatribe pinpoints the theory at the heart of the novel: that David is merely on a "poverty-tourism adventure holiday," willfully ignorant of Indian culture and therefore offensive. The real soul-searching follows, along with David's first bout with dysentery, an extravagant week with Ranj and the grateful return to good green England.

Hi tanijan,

Re: summary The book “Are you experienced” by William Sutcliffe

Hallo tanijan,

Re: summary The book “Are you experienced” by William Sutcliffe
The book “Are you experienced” by William Sutcliffe deals with young people on a gap year between school and university.
David, the skeptical British narrator of this novel is the only boy who didn't travel with his school friends on a world tour in his free months.
His friends call David a coward, because he doesn’t want to come with them.
He wants to go on a world tour but he doesn't have the courage.
He knows that when he visits a poor country, he can learn alot from the experience. But he doesn’t like the dirt and the diseases you see and can get in a poor country and so thats why he doesn’t want to go there.
Instead, (Stattdessen) he wants to work in Switzerland for a month.
However, he doesn’t know what to do when he gets back from Switzerland, because all his friends are visiting other countries and he is so left alone.
But Liz is there, James' girlfriend. David takes out his phone and calls her.
Liz does not go with James and his school friends, because she wants to visit a special course in university. That’s why Liz and David meet each other every day to spend time together.
David falls in love with Liz, but Liz loves James.
As Liz also finishes her course, David and Liz, friends and quasi-lovers, plann their own journey to India.
David, who just wants to sleep with Liz, his best friend’s girlfriend travels with Liz to India, where they spend three months backpacking. After that university started. He does this because he thinks he might be able to get her into bed.
Liz travels to India with Dave because she wants a companion (Begleitung) for her voyage (Reise) of spiritual self-discovery.
Once there, David is shocked. There are many people and it is like to stepping into an oven. Also he doesn’t like that there were so many poor people in on spot.
In the hotel room, there stayed one other person. His name is J., a short form for Jeremy.
Jeremy has been in India for a long time and has collected a lot of information which can help them.
For example he tells them that they cannot eat meat in India, because that will make them ill.
It doesn't take Dave long to realize that he's made a terrible mistake. He can't handle the heat, he can't eat the food, he's depressed by the poverty, and he hates the other travelers.
And he also realizes that he hates Liz from time to time.
Liz, however, loves India.
Liz induces David to join an ashram, but David is fed up with Liz and he is annoyed with her cultish karma-chasing attitude, he decides to travel solo.
David meets a journalist on his solo trip who says that
David is just on a "poverty-tourism adventure holiday," willfully ignorant of Indian culture.
The real soul-searching follows, along with David's first bout with dysentery, an extravagant week with Ranj, an Englishman from Putney. He is running away from his wealthy prominent family. And the grateful return to good green England.

Re: summary The book “Are you experienced” by William Sutcliffe
Hey tanijan, das hast Du ganz prima gemacht!!!tanijan hat geschrieben:The book “Are you experienced” by William Sutcliffe deals with / is about young people on a gap year between school and university.
David is a young man from London and he is the narrator of this novel. Whereas all of his school friends plan to go on a world tour, he does not want to join them.
His friends call him a coward because of that. And really he would like to go on a world tour but he does not have the courage.
He knows that when he visits a poor country, he can learn a lot from the experience. But he does not like the dirt and the diseases there and that is why he does not want to go.
Instead, (Stattdessen) he wants to work in Switzerland for a month.
However, when he gets back from Switzerland, he does not know what to do with himself, because all his friends are visiting other countries.and he is so left alone.
Only Liz is there. She is his friend's James' girlfriend, but has not joined him because she wants to visit a special course in university. David calls her on the phone and they meeteach otherevery day to spend time together.
David falls in love with Liz, but Liz loves James.
When Liz has finished her course, they plan their own backpacking journey to India.
Liz takes Dave along because she wants a companion (Begleitung) for her voyage (Reise) of spiritual self-discovery.
David just wants to sleep with Liz and thinks that he might not get a chance once university is started.
As soon as they arrive in India, David is shocked. There are so many people and it is liketostepping into an oven. Also he does not like to see so many poor people in one spot.
They share their hotel room with another person. His name is J., a short form for Jeremy.
Jeremy has been in India for a long time and has collected a lot of information which can help them.
For example he tells them that they cannot eat meat in India, because that will make them ill.
It does not take Dave long to realize that he has made a terrible mistake. He cannot handle the heat, he cannot eat the food, he is depressed by the poverty, and he hates the other travelers.
And he also realizes that he hates Liz from time to time.
Liz, however, loves India.
Liz induces David to join an ashram, but David is fed up with Liz and he is annoyed with her cultish karma-chasing attitude. So he decides to travel solo.
David meets a journalist on his solo trip who says that David is just on a "poverty-tourism adventure holiday" and seems to remain willfully ignorant of Indian culture.
Then follows the real soul-searching. Although David is weakened by dysentery he spends an extravagant week with Ranj, an Englishman from Putney, who is running away from his wealthy prominent family. And finally David returns home to his beloved home country England.
