this sentence as such is not wrong but .. I know we all hate the "but" bit
..
It is a sentence that an English person would not say. It is more common to simply say:
In recent years I worked my way up.
And one thing: it is in recent years, not in THE recent years. Simply because recent years is not countable.

These are the words of Frank Doyle, the manager of the wellknown Davy Byrne´s pub in Dublin´s Duke Street.
He exactly said: I started as a junior lounge boy and worked my way up the ladder to became general manager.
And to your remark: it is in recent years, not in THE recent years. Simply because recent years is not countable.
