Film review - Korrektur

In the following I would like to discuss the movie "25th Hour"
"25th Hour" is a film by Spike Lee produced in the year 2002. The action takes place in New York City in the year 2002.

The story is about the drug dealer Monty Brogan´s last 24 hours of freedom before he begins a seven year prison sentence. The main characters are Edward Norton (Monty Brogan), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Jacob Elinsky), Berry Papper (Frank Slaughter) and Rosario Dawson (Naturelle Rivera).
The film begins with Monty and his bodyguard Kostya saving an ownerless dog that they had found in the street. The film then jumps to the present, a few years later.
Monty is walking the streets of New York with his dog Doyle and visits some places, like his old school. During the course of the day, Monty asks himself who could have betrayed him at the police. In the final hours before his set lockedown he will need to say goodbye to his girlfriend, his father and his two best friends Jacob and Frank. Monty has several conversations with them and serious discussions on different places. He visits his father in his pub, Frank in his apartment near Ground-Zero and Jacob in school, where he works as a teacher. Lateron, he goes with Frank, Jacob and his girlfriend to a club. The club is owned by his "business friends" from the Russian Mafia. In the club, Monty speaks to a group of the Russian bad guys. They give Monty some advice on how to survive in prison. Then Monty finds out that it was Kostya, his bodyguard, who betrayed him at police. After they had left the club, Monty goes to the park with his best friends, where he gives his dog Doyle to Jacob. Then Monty says that he is terrified of being raped in prison, and asks Frank to beat him up, because he think that if he goes to jail as an ugly looking guy he might have a chance to survive. First Frank was shocked, but in the end, Monty gets what he wants. Then Monty goes home, to say goodbye to his girlfriend and gets in his father´s car.
As they are on the way to prison, his dad offers to just keep driving out west and tells Monty of how he can find some town out there in the desert to disappear and to start a new life for himself.

I think that it is a brilliant and disturbing story. The actors are well chosen, specially Edward Norton plays his roll outstanding well. The slow and dramatic music fits perfectly to the movie and the camera movements are brilliant. "25th Hour" was one of the first American movies that was set in New York after 9/11. The movie is a homage to New York and the people who live there. But it is also a movie about family, friendship and most importantly, about hope. The movie is definitely worth watching.

Hi Xaphier,
