What is BMI?

Beitrag von andy55 »

I have written a summary to the following theme: BMI
Please can you correct it? It would be nice :P

Here is my short summary to the theme of BMI.

What is BMI, and what does it exist?

Healtcare professionals like doctors or nurses use BMI to determine a possible overweight or clinically obese.
A recent statistic shows that a quarter of adults are overweight.

Their risk for heart disease, diabetes, stroke and certain cancers (breast and colon) are greatly inceased.

Too much fat around the body promotes the development of osteoarthritis.
This group also includes emotional problems such as low self-esteem and depression.

Adults and BMI:

BMI is calculated as follows: weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared.
BMI can be divided into the following groups: underweight, ideal, overweight, obese, very obese
A disadvantage of the BMI is the accuracy.
This applies to athletes or women in pregnancy or or people who are frail.

A high BMI is only a means to assess body fat and their danger to health

The measurement of abdominal girth is considered to be a reliable indicator.
Men with a waist measurement over 94 cm or women with a waist measurement over 80 cm are a risk group.

Children and BMI:

The number of obese children has increased and the occur of diabetis is only a consequence.
The child´s BMI is calculated with the same method as for adults but with special in age appropriate charts.

Waist circumference

The waist circumference is a accurate measure of future healthrisk.
Heart disease, diabetes but also stroks are associated with too much fat around the middle.

A waist circumference greater than 80cm for women and 94cm for men to increase those risks further.

The waist circumference is calculated as follows: A tape measure place between the lower rips and hips and breathe out.
So you can measure the waist circumference

Apples and pears

Most of us store body fat on two places: Around the middle known as the apple shape, or beer belly. Around the hips it is known as per shape.

Excess fat in the abdominal region puts a greater risk as fat in the hips and thighs.

Waist-Hip Ratio

It is important to calculate the waist-hip ratio.
For men with a ratio more than 1.0, or women with a waist hip ratio more than 0.8 this means that you are an apple shape.

Any future:

The measurement of BMI is without doubt important also the fat around the waist.
Additional risk factors as smoking, alcohol abuse, a lack of exercise, unhealthy diet or stress and must not be overlooked.
