The school system in the different parts of Great Britain differ in some minor points. Furthermore are there several options to complete your school education, which is affected by regional variations, which have its seeds in the Local Education Authorities ( LEAs ) and their freedom of scope to construct schools. In general education is compulsory for children from the age of five until the age of sixteen. Before the age of five the parents can decide what they want to do with their kids. For example the children can stay at home, go to a toddler group, a playgroup or a nursery school like in Germany. When the child is five years old it goes to the primary school which is divided into two steps, infant school ( from age five to seven) and junior school (from age seven to eleven) . After the primary school the pupils attend to a secondary school. Different types of a secondary school are at hand for example the “Comprehensive School” – comparable to the german “Gesamtschule” - , which is visited by eighty-five percent of the pupils, because it have not a special postulate so that absorb every child. Another type of school is the “Grammar School”, this school offers children a for the most part academically oriented education. Children, who have got special abilities and pass the entrance examination, called “11-plus”, will be accepted. Aged sixteen the pupils graduate the Sek. I with the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE). If you let for two years the school out, you will have an opportunity to do your General Certificate of Education - Advanced Level ( A-Level ). A academic year, from September until July, is divided into three trimester ( Terms ), which are over a period of nine till eleven weeks. It starts with the Autumn Term, from the beginning of September to the middle of December. Spring term ( January – middle or end of March ) begins after a two-week-break. After a two-week-break again the Summer Term ( April – middle of July ) follows.
