Nachdem ich mich mal wieder über meinen verqueren Satzbau und mein "denglish" geärgert habe, habe ich online gesucht und bin auf diese Seite gestoßen.
Ich bin für jede Korrektur dankbar.
Dies hier ist mein Part einer "Gruppenanalyse", daher der Fokus auf sarcasm bzw. cynicism.
Vorab schonmal: DANKE, DANKE, DANKE!
Most striking and effective is the novelist’s use of irony, sarcasm, and cynicism.
By saying the opposite of what he actually means, he creates an ironical overtone on the whole text, which also makes it funny to read (ll. 49 “May he rot in hell...”).
By proposing cannibalism (ll.7-8) he wants to show the reader his dystopian vision of the upcoming future in a deeply cynical way.
When the protagonist enumerates all his goods and chattels, sarcasm dominates everything (cf. ll.15-16ff.).
His aversion of his past life is senseable in every text line. (ll. 20 “...when I got around...”).
He compares himself with Tarzan when he was “looking - in vain – for another Jane (l. 35-36).
During the Text he always contrasts his former way of behaving “ecologically” with his permanent thoughtlessness
(ll. 21-22 vs. 22-24, ll. 20 “...and I did recycle...” vs. Ll. 39-41 “...squeezed down the window...”), it is pure self-mockery.
But he also blames the reader or -more precisely- he blames the whole Western world (l. 11 “Just like You”, ll. 43-45) for behaving thoughtless
and overcrowding the earth with waste.
This text excerpt ends with the likewise very cynical conclusion that one has to be an enemy of the people if he wants to be a friend of the earth (ll. 60-61).
All these means create a humorous tone that alternates between ironical, sarcastic and cynical. It is probably this mixture that makes the text entertaining and
interesting to read and that is certainly more effective than any form of open accusation (l. 9: “I’m not preaching, I’m not going to preach…”).
T.C. Boyle’s specific humour is of the sort that gets stuck in the reader’s throat.
