Depression is one of the most common diseases nowadays, especially in the developed countries. The more people get the more they’re becoming unhappy. They don’t see a sense in their life. We are all looking for their fulfillment in our jobs, family or religion. And if life doesn’t work these aspects are responsible. In Job it’s the boss who treats me badly, in family it’s the partner who never has time for me and in religion it’s god who is responsible for my unhappy life. We always tend to blame others. Of course, nobody wants to confess to do a fault. It’s easier to look for the mistakes of the others. But if we continue doing that we’ll be unhappy for the rest of our life. There will always be persons and situation who/which we don’t like but we also have to accept that we can not change a person or a situation. We can rather change ourselves. Happiness is created our mind and it’s our way to think. We can create happiness through our attitude towards life. For that, we have to know ourselves. All starts with self-reflection. In order to that self-help books can help us to be a better performer. They make us think more about ourselves.
I read Follow your heart and being happy of Andrew Matthews. Being happy is a challenge. It’s the wish of every human being but it seems to be very difficult. Of course, it’s difficult if we, as I already mentioned, try to change the persons or situations who/which “makes” me unhappy. But we can change the ways we think. And it’s also difficult if we expect of happiness to be a steady-state. Of course, in life we never can always be happy but the challenge is to see the opportunities even in situations which don’t make us happy. It’s always easy to have a moan but can we also be thankful for the challenges in our life? Without the bad we won’t see the good. And without the bad experience we won’t learn. We should admit that we need bad experiences. A child who touches a hot plate makes a bad experience but learns not to touch it anymore. Through bad experience we learn to make it better and we develop ourselves further.
But what implications does it have for Organizational Behavior? Work assumes a big part in our lives.
First of all, for being happy it’s important to find the right organization, the right job that fits to your abilities and values. It’s important to do what you want to do. Mostly, you have to prefer following your heart even if the mind, the parents, the teacher, the society say “no”. Sometimes it’s better to swim against the stream to find the right way. If you don’t love your job you can never be challenged. For being good you need passion.
In organizations you have to deal with a lot of different people and situations. If we are not happy with a situation we tend to blame others. But often it’s just the way we think that makes our situation difficult. As I mentioned before we can also change the way we think instead of blaming others. It’s harder to work on the own mistakes than searching for the mistakes of others but it’ll be more successful.
Of course, if you are on a higher position like managers are you have to lead other employees. According to the Hawthorne-studies we know that social conditions impact the efficiency of the employees. In order to that we have to create conditions that make the employees happy to be more effective.
As mentioned in the beginning many people suffer from depression. That could have many reasons. One reason could be the job.
In other words self-reflection books can help to find the right way, to find out what makes me and my surroundings happy and to prevent diseases like depression and burn-out.
All in all I really enjoyed reading those two books. They make me think about myself nevertheless I won’t be confident with the whole topics of those books. I agree with Andrew Matthews that creating happiness is the way you think and the perspective you see a situation. He says that you don’t have to make yourself dependent, to learn to let your things go, even if you love it. I totally agree with his opinion but on the other hand he encourages us to focus on something material. Is that not a way to make yourself dependent? I don’t know how a person who doesn’t have enough to eat and who has to work really hard to survive will think about sentences like “Recognize that poverty is a mental disease” or “Think poor, stay poor! Think rich, stay rich!”. Those easy words could make people with a hard life very angry.
We are all the same because we are human beings so we can all change the way we think. But we all live in a different context and all of us make different experiences. We can encourage every person to think positive. But I think it’s presumptuous of a person who grew up in a development country (I guess the author did) to generalize (physical) things for everyone.
Additionally, I don’t want to believe that every circumstances were self-created. It says that we were responsible for everything what happen to our life. For me, it’s sometime easier to learn to accept life how it is that challenging always to be better. And that may be a problem I see in those books. They may encourage our egoism, our pursuit to achieve more and to be better all the time. And these are also factors which could make us unhappy if we recognize we fail or we aren’t the person we want to be.
In other words I want to say that it’s still important to stay critic. Even if I don’t agree with the way the author has written his book it makes me think about those topics. It helps us think about the question “who am I?”. And that may also be a benefit of those books. You have to think if the “rules” of this book are consistent with your values. But for that you have to find out your values first. My terminal value is happiness and I think that’s also the reason why I choose those books. But those books can also help to rethink your values again. For me, making money is not an instrumental value for happiness. But maybe it’s for the author so I can not judge whether it’s right or wrong what he says. I can only ask myself what I really want and expect of my life.

Hi Aniya

Guter Text, ohne Frage!

Happiness is created in our minds and it depends on our way of thinking. We can create happiness through our attitude towards life. To achieve this aim, we have to know ourselves first. Self-reflection is the key, thinking about and understanding yourself. Not everyone of us knows how, though, so self-help books can help us. They make us thinkmoreabout ourselves.
I read "Follow your Heart" and "Being Happy" by Andrew Matthews.
Being happy is a challenge. It’s every human's wish, but it seems to be very difficult. Of course, it’s difficult if we, as I already mentioned, try to change the persons or situations that “make” us unhappy. But we can change the waysswe think. And it’s also difficult if we expect of happiness to be a steady state. Of course, we can't always be happy, but the challenge is to see the opportunities even in situations which make us unhappy. It’s always easy to moan, but can we also be thankful for the challenges in our lives? Without the bad we wouldn’t see the good. And without the bad experience we wouldn’t learn. We should admit that we need bad experiences. A child who touches a hotplate (= Herdplatte) makes a bad experience but learns not to touch it again. Through bad experience we learnto make it betterand we develop ourselvesfurther.
But what implications does this have for organizational behavior (Ist das ein Fachausdruck? Our job is a big part of our lives.
First of all, for being happy it’s important to find the right organization, therightjob that suits your abilities and values. It’s important to do what you want to do. Mostly, you have to prefer following your heart, even if the mind, the parents, the teacher, the society say “no”. Sometimes it’s better to swim against the stream in order to find the right way. If you don’t love your job you can never be challenged. For being good you need passion.
In organizations you have to deal with a lot of different people and situations. If we are not happy with a situation we tend to blame others. But often it’s just the way we think that makes our situation difficult. As I mentioned before, we can also change the way we think instead of blaming others. It’s harder to work on one's own mistakes than those of others, but it’ll be more successful.
Of course, if you are in a senior position, you have to lead other employees. According to the "Hawthorne-Studies",we know thatsocial conditions have an impact on the efficiency of the employees. Because of that we have to create conditions that make the employees happy and consequently more effective.
As I mentioned before, many people suffer from discontent. There can be many reasons for this, one of them could be the job.
In other words, books that teach self-reflection can help to find the right way, to find out what makes me and my surroundings happy and to prevent discontent that might lead to ailments of the body or the mind.
All in all, I really enjoyed reading those two books. They have made me think about myself. Even though I don't totally agree with all he says, I do agree with Andrew Matthews that creating happiness is based on the way you think and your perspective on a given situation. He says that you don’t have to make yourself dependent, but to learn to letyourthings go, even if you love them. But on the other hand, he encourages us to focus on material things. Is not that a way of making yourself dependent?
I don’t know how a person who doesn’t have enough to eat and who has to work really hard to survive will think about sentences like “Recognize that poverty is a mental disease” or “Think poor, stay poor! Think rich, stay rich!”. These assertions are bound to make people with a hard life very angry.
We are all the same, because we are human beings and so we can all change the way we think. But we all live in a different context and all of us make different experiences. We can encourage every person to think positive. But I think it’s presumptuous of a person who grew up in a developing country (I guess the author did) to generalize (physical) things for everyone.
Additionally, I don’t want to believe that all of life's circumstances are self-created. It would mean that we are responsible for everything that happens in our lives. For me personally, it’s sometimes easier to accept life the way it is than always trying to make it better.
And this is where I find those books a bit problematic. Theymayencourage our egoism, our pursuit to achieve more and to be better all the time. But these are also factors which could make us unhappy if we recognized that we failed or we weren’t the person we wanted to be.
In other words, it’s important to remain critical. But even if I don’t agree with everything the author says, he makes me think about those topics. He helps us think about the question “who am I?”. And that may also be a benefit of those books. You have to decide if the “rules” of this book are consistent with your values. But for that you have to find out what your values are, first.
My most important value is happiness and I think that’s also the reason why I choose these books in the first place. But they can also help you to rethink your values. For me, making money is not an instrumental value for happiness. But maybe it is for the author, so I can not judge whether what he says is right or wrong. I can only ask myself what I really want and expect ofmylife.

vielen vielen dank.
