I was born and raised in Sömmerda, a pretty little city of Germany with some interesting amenities to mention. After I have done my graduation in Sömmerda, I decided to take up my studies in Erfurt which is a real beautiful city with several things which making the life livable and comfortable. Precisely because the distance between Sömmerda and Erfurt approximately amounts only 20 kilometres and I want to save money which I would have to invest in a flat to live in Erfurt, I daily accept an half hour’s drive to reach the University. Nevertheless, I am thinking about moving to a living community in Erfurt for a considerable time. That is why I have to weigh up personal advantages and disadvantages of Erfurt and Sömmerda to simplify my decision weather leaving my hometown or not. In order to this decision I am going to compare Sömmerda and Erfurt regarding their geography, their culture, their economy and their nightlife.

Geographically regarded, Erfurt offers a lot of different conditions like small forests, a modern downtown or soothing meadows. Erfurt is the capital city of Thuringia and is the main city nearest to the geographical centre of Germany, located 100 kilometres southwest of Leipzig. It covers an area of approximately 270 square kilometers, has just over 200000 inhabitants and has a population density of 755 inhabitants per square kilometre. Only these couple of numbers proofing that Erfurt is not a small city as one could think. Furthermore, I have to mention that Erfurt owns an old town centre which has a size of 3 square kilometres and is frequently astonishing visitors from the whole world because of its great looking buildings and attractions.

But also Sömmerda has a beautiful old town centre with not less pretty buildings than Erfurt. Sömmerda is capitol of the district of Sömmerda and took its way up from a tiny farm town to an industrial city many centuries ago. With reference to area, population and population density, Sömmerda is obviously smaller than Erfurt as following numbers clearly proofing. The area-size of Sömmerda is about 80 square kilometres, this is only just about a third of Erfurt’s area. Equally the amount of population and the population density, Sömmerda has only 20000 inhabitants and 251 inhabitants per square kilometre, distinctly expressing the contrasts of size.

In the aspect of culture Erfurt has plenty to offer some really interesting and funny things for every group of age. Beside several theatres and museums the city owns a zoo, an aquarium, a range of sports grounds and quite a few really beautiful parks. Since 2003, the modern new built opera house is home of Theater Erfurt and its Philharmonic Orchestra. The "grand stage" section has 800 seats and the "studio stage" can hold 200 spectators. The most famous museum of Erfurt is the “Stadtmuseum” which presents the more than 1250 year old history of the city and is not only a place to go for tourists. Additionally one can find the biggest zoo of Germany in Erfurt, which is host for 1200 animals and 128 different species. Otherwise in Erfurt one can find some magnificent spots dealing with sports like the “Steigerwaldstadion”, a velodrome and an indoor ice rink to skate or watch an ice-hockey match.

Also in Sömmerda one can find a lot of spots to visit to have a nice time. Sadly I have to say that one cannot find a cinema, a zoo, an aquarium or a theatre in my hometown but if one loving sports, one have to like Sömmerda. The “Kurt-Neubert-Sportpark” is such a great place to go if one like playing football, playing tennis, wants to bowl or only searching a sports bar to watch football and drink a beer with friends. Furthermore, Sömmerda is famous for its canoe track and the rafting event which is taking place once a year and has got an indoor swimming pool. Concerning culture and fun, it is obviously that Sömmerda in relation to Erfurt has got a lot fewer to offer and is a lot quieter.

Economy is an important fact referable comparing Erfurt and Sömmerda. The economical profile of Erfurt changed from a location of industry to a service-centre-city, whereas the main service company is “Müller Weingarten”. A modern traffic system has got highest priority for a service-centre-city like Erfurt. Erfurt owns a main station, a tramway network, a city bus network and a big airport for air traffic. Especially in winter, the trams are a perfect alternative driving by car or going by bicycle to reach requested destinations very fast and uncomplicated. For students or pupils the tram is nearly the most important public conveyance. Beside the University and the University of Applied Sciences, Erfurt has got 31 primary schools, 14 regular schools, 3 comprehensive schools, 9 grammar schools, 19 trade schools and 2 music schools.

Vielen Dank im Voraus. Mit freundlichen Grüßen :)

Hi Kola

I was born and raised in Sömmerda, a pretty little city of Germany with some interesting amenities to mention. I was born and raised in Sömmerda, a nice little city in Germany with some interesting features worth mentioning.
After I have done my graduation in Sömmerda, I decided to take up my studies in Erfurt which is a really nice city with several things which making the life livable and comfortable. Since the distance between Sömmerda and Erfurt is only 20 kilometres and I couldn't really bring myself to spend money on a flat in Erfurt so far, I accept a daily half-hour drive. to reach the University. Nevertheless, I have been thinking about moving to a living community in Erfurt for a considerable time. That is why I would like to compare Erfurt and Sömmerda regarding their geography, theirculture, their economy and their nightlife, in order to simplify my decision.

Geographically regarded, Erfurt offers a lot of different traits like small forests, a modern downtown or soothing meadows. Erfurt is the capital city of Thuringia and is the biggest city near the geographical centre of Germany, located 100 kilometres southwest of Leipzig. It covers an area of approximately 270 square kilometres, has just over 200,000 inhabitants and thus a population density of 755 inhabitants per square kilometre. These couple of numbers suffice to indicate that Erfurt is not the small city one would expect. Furthermore, I have to mention that Erfurt features an old town centre of about 3 square kilometres. Its great looking buildings and attractions are frequently admired by visitors from all over the world.

But Sömmerda has a beautiful old town centre, too, and its buildings are just as pretty as those in Erfurt. Sömmerda is the district capital of Sömmerda and developed from a tiny farm town to an industrial city many centuries ago (Moment, eine Industriestadt kann es ja nicht seit vielen Jahrhunderten sein, so lange gibt's die ja noch nicht!!). Sömmerda is obviously smaller than Erfurt as the following numbers show. The area size of Sömmerda is about 80 square kilometres, this is only just about a third of Erfurt’s area. As could be expected, the contrast of size is obvious in the number of inhabitants (only 20000) as well as population density (251 inhabitants per square kilometre), too.

Speaking about culture, Erfurt has plenty of really interesting and funny things to offer for every age group. Besides several theatres and museums the city owns a zoo, an aquarium, a range of sports grounds and quite a few really beautiful parks. Since 2003, the modern, newly-built opera house has been the home of the "Theater Erfurt" and its "Philharmonic Orchestra". The "grand stage" section has 800 seats and the "studio stage" can seat 200 spectators. The most famous museum of Erfurt is the “Stadtmuseum” which presents the more than 1250 years-old history of the city and is not only interesting for tourists. Additionally, one can find Germany's biggest zoo in Erfurt, in which live 1200 animals of 128 different species. On top of that, there are some magnificent spots for sports like the “Steigerwaldstadion”, a velodrome and an indoor ice rink to skate or watch ice-hockey matches.

But in Sömmerda one can find a lot of spots to visit and enjoy as well. Though I have to admit that there is neither a cinema nor a zoo, an aquarium or a theatre in my hometown. But if you love sports, you will like Sömmerda. The “Kurt-Neubert-Sportpark” is such a great place to go if one likes playing football, playing tennis, bowling or simply drinking a beer with friends at a bar. Furthermore, Sömmerda has got an indoor swimming pool and is famous for its canoe track and the rafting event which takes place once a year. Concerning culture and fun, it is obviously that Sömmerda has got less to offer and is a lot quieter than Erfurt.

Finally, economy is an important factor when we compare Erfurt and Sömmerda. The economical profile of Erfurt changed from a location of industry to a service-centre-city, whereas (hier verstehe ich den Sinn nicht) the main service company is “Müller Weingarten”. Of course, the modern traffic system is most important to a service-centre-city. Erfurt has a main railway station, a tramway network, a city bus network and a big airportfor air traffic. Especially in winter, the trams are a perfect alternative to going by car or bicycle. For students or pupils the tram is nearly the most important public means of transport. Besides the " Erfurt University" and the "University of Applied Sciences", Erfurt has got 31 primary schools, 14 regular schools, 3 comprehensive schools, 9 grammar schools, 19 trade schools and 2 music schools.

Weiter so! :freu:

For Sömmerda, the most important economic sector is the electrical industry with biggest company which produces personal computers and distributing them into the whole world named “Fujitsu”. That is why Sömmerda needs to have a modern traffic system, too. Similar to Erfurt, Sömmerda lays on the freeway 71 and of course having a train station which was built in 1881 and a bus network including 34 busses which conveying people to important spots like schools, supermarkets or their place of work. Sömmerda has got 1 grammar school, 2 primary schools, 2 comprehensive schools, 1 trade schools and 1 music school.

For me, the most important fact which significantly affects my decision moving to a living community in Erfurt is nightlife. In Erfurt, one not only has the possibility to visit a discotheque or a bar where lots of people gathering to talk, dance or just drink some coffee or some beer at the weekend. People who are not consider satisfied watching TV or sitting at home having the possibility going into a bar, a discotheque or a cafeteria to make the life more attractive in every day of the week.

Sömmerda offers not nearly as many possibilities enjoying nightlife, in contrast to Erfurt. Of course, Sömmerda owns a discotheque and some bars, too. The discotheque named “Nachtwerk” which sadly is not even opened every weekend. Also the amount of bars and cafeterias is not as much as the number of bars which Erfurt has to offer. In Sömmerda one can find nearly five bars whereas only one of them has got a cosy atmosphere.

In conclusion, there are a lot of differences between Erfurt and Sömmerda, but it is difficult to decide whether Erfurt or Sömmerda is the better city to life. Surely, if one is a young person and wants to have more opportunities concerning leisure time and nightlife one becomes happy in Erfurt. If one does not like noise and rush of a big city, one would feel better in Sömmerda. But I decided to start a more exciting life as I lead so far and search for a living community in the next semester break.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen :)

The most important economic factor in Sömmerda is the electrical industry. “Fujitsu”, a big company which produces personal computers and sells them all over the world, is based there. That is why Sömmerda needs to have a modern traffic system, too. Like Erfurt, Sömmerda is located on the motorway 71 and has, furthermore, a train station, which was built in 1881. Of course there is also a bus network. As many as 34 busses convey people to important places like schools, supermarkets or their places of work. Sömmerda has got 1 grammar school, 2 primary schools, 2 comprehensive schools, 1 trade schools and 1 musical school.

And still the question of whether I should move to Erfurt and live in a shared flat remains to be answered. For me, the most important appeal, which may well affect my final decision significantly, is nightlife. In Erfurt one has the possibility to visit a disco or a bar, where lots of people gathering in order to talk, dance or just drink coffee or beer at the weekend. But not only then, but on every day of the week. A dream for people who are not satisfied with watching TV or sitting at home and a real chance to make life more attractive.

Sömmerda offers nowhere near as many possibilities for enjoying nightlife. Of course, there are a disco and some bars in Sömmerda. But, unfortunately, the only disco “Nachtwerk” is not even opened every weekend. Also there are, of course, less bars and cafes than in Erfurt. To be honest, in Sömmerda there are (nearly??? findet man nur 4 1/2?) only five bars of which only one has a cosy atmosphere.

In conclusion, there are a lot of differences between Erfurt and Sömmerda, but it is difficult to decide whether Erfurt or Sömmerda is the better city to live in. Obviously, if you are young and want more opportunities of enjoying your leisure time and nightlife, Erfurt will be your choice. If, on the other hand, one does not like the noise and the rush of a big city, one would feel better in Sömmerda. But I have decided to start a more exciting life now and I am going to look for a room in a living community during the next semester break.
