Highland Games
My Topic today is the Highland Games. These Games were created in Scotland. There are now up to 100 Games in one year and the most known are in Braemer. A special guest there is the Queen Elisabeth II. But the Highland Games are not only in Scotland. They are all over the world. All the participants wear a kilt. That’s a knee-length skirt and it’s typical for Scotland.
History
The Scottish King Malcolm III organized in the 11th Century a Scottish village Braemer. He wanted to find the strongest and the fastest men in his kingdom. The strongest men became the king’s Bodyguards and the fastest men became his couriers. Many people came to this contest. Some wanted to take part, other just came as visitors. After the contest of King Malcolm III were more and more Highland Games in Scotland. Maybe the Highland Games already existed and the Celts had invented them but that’s not sure.
Now the Highland Games are not only in Scotland. You can find them all over the world where Scots have settled, also in Germany.
Disciplines
Heavy Games
There are over 45 different disciplines. I explain you now the most famous sports.
• I start with “Tossing the Caber”. At this discipline they toss a large wooden pole. The name of this pole is caber. The aim is not the distance of the throw. They have to run forward and try to throw the caber vertical. The thrower gets a lower score if the caber is angled or if it fall back. The cabers are 5 or 6 meters long and 50 to 60 kg big.
• Now I tell you something about the “Stone Put”. It’s similar to the shot put today. Instead of the steel put they use a large stone. The aim of the discipline is to throw the stone as far as possible.
• Next I want to explain you the discipline “Scottish Hammer Throw”. The participants have to throw a heavy hammer as far as possible. The hammer looks like a sledge hammer.
• I continue now with the discipline “Weight over the bar”. The aim of Weight over the bar is to throw a steel or lead weight with one hand over the top of the bar. They swing the weight between their legs and throw it overhead. The weights are 12 to 25kg heavy.
• Last I explain you the discipline “Sheaf toss”. The participant gets a pitchfork and a bag stuffed with straw and must throw it over a bar. The weight of the bag is normally 7kg. The participants must throw the bag as high as possible.
But the Highland Games are not only heavy games as many people suppose. There are many other events.
Highland Dancing
Between the 19th and 20th Century the Highland Dancing became a discipline at the Highland Games. They dance to the music of bagpipes. There are many kinds of different dances for example the “Sword Dance”, “Highland Fling” and the “Highland Reel”. The Dances look a bit like ballet. The dances include mainly foot work. They dance alone or in groups
Music
At the Highland Games are lots of bagpipe and drum bands. The bands play normally at the opening and close ceremonies. There are also lots of piping and drumming competitions, including solo piping and drumming, small group ensembles and the pipe bands.
Highland Games in Germany
In Germany are also big Highland Games Events. The biggest Highland Games are in Halle and Peine. In Halle are up to 200 participants and in Peine are more then 10 000 visitors. There are also some Highland Games in Kreenheinstetten. That’s near Schwenningen. The Schwäbische Highland Games there are not the typical Highland Games. They have completely new disciplines.
