The Downfall Of The British Automotive Industry

It is actually a sad story, but such things happen. That's life. The following story is on the downfall of the British automotive industry.

After the WW II, there were approx. 55 British car brand names. They all were independent automobile manufactorers. British cars were really popular. They were exported to many countries like India, The Netherlands and Switzerland. Everyone wanted to have them. It was even for Germany difficult to get them after the WW II. Here is a list of some very well-known cars, which were British: Jaguar,
Morris (Mini), Rolls Royce, Bentley, Lotus, Aston-Martin and Rover. Rover was the last independent automobile manufactorer. The Chinese Nanjing Automobile Corporation took over it in July 2005.

In the late 50th a very important invention was made. It was the mile stone. It was a development of the Mini. It featured many new inventions. They put the motor and the gear box in one and so it didn't take so much space in the car than before. So the people had more space inside the car. That was the basic of all modern cars. Then they spoilt it all.
No one wanted to have the cars anymore. There are loads of reasons. One of them are the Imperial Meassures. They are different to the normal European. They weren't acceptable on the market. That means, if there were something wrong with your British car, you wouldn't be able to buy spare parts in a store next door. You have to import them from Great Britain. It took ages to get them. Lots of people had to wait weeks, months or even years to get their cars back ! Then there was something called the British decease. That means, the workers were really often on strike. So it took much more time to deliver the spare parts to the customer and to repair the cars. Besides, it took ages to finish a car, because always one manufactorer of any spare part was on strike and the car stood months unready in the factory. That's why the quality of the cars became worse. The workman ship was very poor.

Then companies must provide offices for the shop stewards. Shop stewards are
represantatives of the Trade Union. They look for actions, which were not accorded to the Trade Union. Every company has one. That costs a company a lot of money.

Then 1968 the British Leyland was found. It was based on many British car brands. It was the biggest automobile manufactorer Britains !
Because of bad management, to less flexibility, they lost all the money. So the company went bancrupt and with it came the downfall of the British automotive industry. No independent automobile manufractorer exist anymore.

Thank you in advance. :) x

Das naechste Mal bitte frueher posten. Siehe Forenregeln.

Ich wuerde grundsaetzlich beleuchten wieso die Arbeiter viel gestreikt haben und inwiefern fehlende Flexibilitaet die British Leyland in den Bankrott getrieben hat.
