Participles im Englischen

Beitrag von missbiss »

Hallo!

A.Change the sentences by using participles if possible.

1.The next boat, which leaves for Dover is the Prince Albert. -> The next boat leaving for Dover is the Prince Albert.

2. As I was tired, I went to sleep. -> Being tired, I went to sleep.

3. The tourist didn't know any English and didn't understand the shopkeeper. -> Not knowing any English, the tourist didn't understand the shopkeeper.

4. After mum had washed the clothes she made some tea. -> Having washed the clothes, mum made some tea.

5. Tom saw a film abut Tibet. Now he wants to go there. -> Seeing a film about Tibet, now Tom wants to go there. (?)

6. When the poem is read by Sue, it sounds better. -> Reading the poem by Sue, it sounds better.

7. The house was too expensive. Therefore I didn't buy it. ->Not possible because there are 2 subjects.

B. Connect these sentences by using participles!

1. I didn't have any money. Therefore I didn't go to the shopping mall. -> Not having any money, I didn't go to the shopping mall.

2. The butler shut all the windows. Then he went to sleep. -> Shutting all the windows, the butler went to sleep.

3. I entered the restaurant. I immediately saw my friend Paul. -> While entering the restaurant, I immediately saw my friend Paul.

Schonmal vielen lieben Dank ;)

Hello, I would translate some sentences as follows:

4. After mum had washed the clothes she made some tea. -> Having washed the clothes, mum made some tea.

"After having washed the clothes....."

5. Tom saw a film abut Tibet. Now he wants to go there. -> Seeing a film about Tibet, now Tom wants to go there. (?)

"After having seen a film about Tibet, Tom now wants to go there...." (word order)

6. When the poem is read by Sue, it sounds better. -> Reading the poem by Sue, it sounds better.

This translation is a bit more difficult. I would suggest: "When Sue reads the poem, it sounds better".

Passive voice doesn't sound right in the first sentence: When the poem is read by Sue..

Regards, Marek.
