Ali lives in a small village in Bangladesh. Half a handful of rice, some water and some tea are sometimes all he has the whole day. His stomach always hurts and his joints always ache. Ali’s father works in a sneaker-factory in Rangpur. He doesn’t earn much but he knows that he’s one of the lucky ones. Ali’s father earns enough to feed his family. A lot of people in his village have died of starvation during the last few years.
OLIVER
Oliver lives in Los Angeles – but he could just as easily live in Paris, Stockholm, Milan or Vienna. His father is a marketing manager with the same corporation that Ali’s father works for. His mother is a nurse. For Sunday breakfast they eat as much as they like of whatever they like. Oliver has just had his second cup of hot chocolate with cream, a plate of ham and eggs, a bowl of corn pops and a croissant. His only problem is that he doesn’t know what he should eat next.
LEE
Lee’s father does the same job for the same American corporation as Ali’s father does, but Lee’s family is never hungry. But they eat too much and the wrong food. They like hamburgers, biscuits, sweets, chips and “fry-ups”. If Lee’s father isn’t careful he’ll soon gets heart trouble. Lee soon gets out of breath and starts to sweat. The boys at school often call him “Fatty” or “Blob”.
