Hallo!

We take our choice for the special project topic out of the main topic “Crude oil – a resource”
on “crude oil in consumer electronics”.
The reason behind is that we haven’t heard about alternative research in this subject area yet
and it will be very interesting to find out how much crude oil is used in the consumer electronics.
At the beginning of the project we start to search for substances which are used in consumer
electronics. In this connection we want to filter out the chemical characteristics of the
commodities made of crude oil and hopefully will find some alternatives.
We put our main focus on four different products: mobile phone, digital camera, washing
machine and a computer mainboard.
It will be interesting to find out how much crude oil is percentage-wise enclosed in these products
and how the search for alternatives is turn out to be: Are there already alternatives at all? If so:
where? And how shall they be produced? If not, do we get an idea how to produce a new or
related substance?
Finally we hope for the accomplishment of a presentation of the chemical characteristics and to
figure out if there are alternatives without using crude oil.

Zusammenfassung des Projekts:
The usage of plastics in electronic units is very popular. That is why we restrict it to four different
commodities: washing machine, mobile phone, camera and a computer mainboard.
For example a washing machine, whose weight is 83 kg, consists of 12 kg plastic. Nearly every
part of a mainboard is made of crude oil in form of epoxy resins. Epoxy resins are the foundation
of boards, casting compound, insulators and chip containers. The reason for that is the low priced
and quick fabrication. At the present time there are no alternatives for epoxy resins. Although
the research is currently in progress, there are still no alternatives developed, which come up to
the application area of epoxy resins.
The digital camera and the mobile phone also consist of crude oil containing plastics. Their cases
and displays are made of PMMA. Polymethylmethacrylate is a very stable plastic and it can be
used in many different ways. Furthermore, as one of the few polymers, one product
characteristic of PMMA is the transparency. We found three versions as an alternative for PMMA:
- Biological plastic, based on corn,
- arboform and
- PMMA made by bacteria enzymes without crude oil.
The biological plastics shall be used for mobile phones for example.
Arboform is a substance consisting of lignin. Lignin is a waste product in the paper industry and
normally used for energy extraction. The outcome due to the mixture of lignin and natural fibre is
the thermoplastic basic material arboform. By dint of that basic material, many different parts in
the consumer electronics can be produced.
Conditional upon the development of PMMA made by bacteria enzymes without crude oil,
scientists hope for engineering a plastic with equal characteristics as PMMA but without using
crude oil.

Eigener Standpunkt am Ende des Projekts:
Considering of my point of view at the beginning, I will now define my point of view and the
reflection afterwards.
At the beginning it was pretty difficult to pick up some useful information. We succeeded in, after
contacting different manufacturers as well as to be lucky at the later research.
During the working on the project “crude oil in consumer electronics” I reach to the conclusion
that it would last for some years till an all-purpose product, made without crude oil, could get
produced. We found some alternatives to PMMA which are currently used in smaller areas but the
extensive manufacturing with these alternatives is still too expensive at the moment.
The research for alternatives for epoxy resins turns out to be catchier. It combines many
different useful characteristics and is used in nearly every electronic component. To develop an
alternative for it, will take some decades. Furthermore it seems to be currently impossible to
engineer a substance that can hold a candle to epoxy resin with its useful characteristics and
mainly its cheap fabrication.
From my point of view it seems to be a huge challenge for the research to find a suitable
alternative for crude oil in the consumer electronics.
This alternative should be just as
all-purpose as crude oil, but its usage should be ethically more acceptable than presently.

Ich weiß, es ist sehr viel Text, aber vielleicht fallen euch Dinge auf, die man besser so nicht schreiben sollte
