The two main characters of the book are called George Milton and Lennie Small. The two men live and work together although they are not related to each other.
The book includes a description of both men and so you can receive an impression how they look like. The description of George Milton is: This “man was small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features. Every part of him was defined: small, strong hands, slender arms, a thin and bony nose.”
Lennie is described as the exactly opposite of George. He is “a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, and wide, sloping shoulders” (p. 5). Although Lennie is a huge man with great force his is very sensitive. He loves everything that is smooth and he would like to have his own pet to tend for.
When you read trough the first pages of the book you think that they were travelling together because they were friends but later on you experience that Lennie’s aunt, who already died, begged George to look after Lennie. The reason why is, that Lennie is mentally retarded and unable to look after himself. He often gets into troubles and George has the mission to help him out when Lennie did something wrong again. Because of Lennie’s ability to get into difficulties George wishes that he wouldn’t have the task to look after him. But actually he really likes his companion, although his has a lot to do with him.
