Simon Beckett was born in 1968 and grew up in Sheffield (England). He is a british Journalist and an author. For the most part he writes detective stories and his book “The chemisrty of death” has been a bestseller for months. Before he became a journalist, he taught Spain and played in several bands. Since 1992 he has written for The Times, The Independent on Sunday Review, The Daily Telegraph, The Observer and other major British publications. In 2002 Simon Beckett went to the National Forensic Academy in Tennessee and visited the “Body Farm”, whereat he should write an article for the Daily Thelegraph Magazine. It´s a research facility where real human cadavres are used to resarch the process of decomposition and ways of identifying time since death. The research is also important for murder investigations. This visit inspired him to write “The Chemistry of Death”.
After a trauma (an accident, where David Hunter lost his wife and daughter) David Hunter decides to turn his back on his former life and career as an forensic anthropologist, helping the police with their cases.
Now David Hunter lives in the quiet and peaceful village Manham on the Norfolk Broads and works as a country doctor for Henry Maitland, his antecessor, who sits/is in a wheelchair. But after three years his past catches up with him. A multilated body is found close to Manham and so David is asked by the Chief Inspector Mackenzie to use his knowledge to detect the murderer. At first Dr. Hunter is in two minds, but then he assists the police and they discover that the victim is a women out of the village. Meanwhile another woman disappears and the situation gets worse. Just a few days later two other dead bodies are found. One can be identified as the second woman, but the other cadaver belonged to a young student, who visited Manham years ago. The whole village gets more and more distrustful and everybody knows that the murderer is amongst them. Ofcourse David Hunter, the incurred doctor, is one of the suspects. But no one knows about his second employment.
Despite this terrible incidence, David tries to continue his life and gets to know Jenny Hammond, a young teacher in Manham. Although he hasn´t got over the death of his wife and daughter, he cares a lot about Jenny and they fall in love with each other. But suddenly she disappears and David knows, that she is suffering in that very moment. He tries everything to find her or to find out who the committer is. And accidentally the whole crime clears up. Dr.Henry Maitland, his employer is involved. He has medicated the mentally ill gardener of the village for a long time and was fascinated by his sick behaviour. Due to the fact that he hated his wife he doesn´t even care that the gardener loves bedeveling and killing women. At the end Herny tries to kill both David and Jenny, but they survive.
