"How are you?" - "I'm good"

Beitrag von Redfrettchen »

Hi,
as you might have guessed from the title, this thread is about the use of "good" as reply to "how are you".
"How are you?"
Is it ok to say "I'm good"? I think people will often correct you and say something along the lines of
"... well. You're well."
But it doesn't make much sense, since saying "I'm well" either means "I'm not sick" or "I'm doing the 'act of being' good", i.e. "well" is used as an adverb.
I admit, "I'm good" could also be the reply to "Are you ok?", but at least it would make more sense in the grammatical way.

I know, I could just stick to saying "I'm fine", but I would still be interested in your opinions.

Cheers,
Thomas

Hi Thomas.

Some words can't always be directly translated into another language - it depends on the context.
For example, you could say: I'm good at English; I'm good at singing; I'm good at computer games, but not, "I'm good thanks", as a reply to someone asking about you, yourself.
Of course it doesn't necessarily have to mean they are inquiring about your health, but it's just better English to say, "I'm fine thanks" (casual) or, "I am very well thank you" (more polite).

Hope this helps you and hope you are good. oops! well.

Nah, it's not so much a question of translating something into English, since I wouldn't say "Ich bin gut" in German.

The issue was addressed in these two videos
I Do Videos Good by thatbostonchick
and
Dictionary of Jack: Good by JackDanyells

I know, it's comedy, but I do see their point.

The videos were really funny.
But as Jack himself said, "I think it's OK to say, 'I'm doing good', as long as you understand the grammatical rule that you're breaking".

...well, rules are for breaking, aren't they. :jo:

PS. Hope you are doing well oops! goodly.

At least it's a good (sic!) way to annoy people, using good, goodly and well ^^
