Hallo ihr Lieben,

ich hätte mal eine Vokabelfrage, bzw. eine Frage zur Präposition:

Wie sagt man denn beim Fußball ?

Our football team lost ... three goals to nil.

a) with
b) by
c) to
d) in

c und d schließe ich aus, kann mich aber zwischen a und b nicht entscheiden.

ich würde einfach sagen

our team lost three:nill

#199 When reporting a football score, e.g. Leeds 4, Liverpool 3 we say that the score was Leeds four, Liverpool three or that Leeds beat Liverpool four three. We do not say 4 to three (sic.). If both teams score the same number of goals we call it a draw. For example Leeds and Liverpool drew two two. (See also tip #95)

In this particular case the question was as to which preposition is the correct one to fill the gap.

The answer is "by"

Our team lost by 3 goals to nil.


The use of "3 goals to nil" is only possible in this construction.

Tatsächlich mußte ich eine Präposition finden, weil es sich um
eine Wortschatzübung für eine Cambridge Prüfung handelt. Und da
waren vier Möglichkeiten zur Auswahl.
