Slogans – Are they important?
What is a slogan? In the advertising language, a slogan is a catchy phrase, which supports advertising messages and products.
Coca-Cola has used different slogans, which are adapted to social situations and big events like the World Cup in Germany. They use slogans and ads to convince their customers to buy Coca-Cola. Therefore we interviewed a few people of different age groups, in order to find out what they know about the different Coca-Cola slogans.
We prepared three different questions:
1) Have you any idea, which company uses the slogan: “It’s the real thing” or “Make it real”?
2) Are you able to translate the slogan into German?
3) Do you buy Coca-Cola?
Here is the result.

We found out that most people know the slogans of Coca-Cola, but they don’t understand them.
That’s very interesting. Why has Coca-Cola chosen English slogans to convince the Germans?
Coca-Cola uses English slogans, because they are easier to keep in mind. English is also a world language, which everyone might have to understand. But most of the respondents weren’t able to translate the slogan. Nearly everyone buys the product Coca-Cola and enjoys it. This result shows us that the slogans are on the customers mind. This element of advertisement has been used by Coca-Cola since its beginning in 1886. By and by the slogans developed, because of historical and social changes. In America in 1929, the company has chosen the slogan: “The pause that refreshes”, which was a symbol for a modern way of life. With this slogan Coca-Cola was a part of everyday life, work and free time. In Germany the Coca-Cola company used the slogan: “Köstlich erfrischend” to describe the features of Coca-Cola and to reach more popularity in 1929.
So you can see the slogans are one of the most important elements of advertisement.
