Kommas / Semikolons in einer Auflistung

Hallo,

Ich hab eine Frage bezüglich der Zeichensetzung im Englischen. Setzt man in einer Auflistung wie zum Beispiel in "I bought apples, oranges, and bananas." ein Komma vor das Bindewort "and", das die letzten beiden Elemente der Liste verbindet oder setzt man keins. Ich habe mir sagen lassen, dass es diesbezüglich keine verbindliche Festlegung gibt und dass die New York Times zum Beispiel an dieser Stelle ein Komma setzt, da es Teil ihres "grammatical style guide" ist. Entspricht das der Wahrheit, ist das wirklich Geschmackssache und wenn ja, welche Variante ist weiter verbreitet?

Eine themenverwandte Frage: Ist es korrekt Semikolons zu verwenden, wenn die Elemente einer Auflistung selbst Kommas enthalten? Beispiel: "I played tennis, which I liked; slept long, which I haven't done for a while; and fixed my bike, which broke on my last Austria trip."

Ich hab mal verschiedene Artikel auf der Webseite von BBC durchgeblättert und eine Menge Aufzählungen ohne Komma vor dem "and" gefunden. In den meisten Fällen sind es Aufzählungen mit drei Elementen, wobei das erste und das zweite Element mit einem Komma verbunden sind, während das dritte mit einem "and" aber ohne Komma angehängt ist.

Machen diese Leute einfach so viele Fehler oder ist die Variante ohne Komma vielleicht auch legitim?

Die lassen das Komma auch weg wenn es mehr als 3 Elemente sind.
