"1 Euro are..." vs. "1 Euro is..."

my classmates and I had an interesting oral fight a few days ago. The question was the following:

"1 Euro are 2.50 Maltese Lira."

or

"1 Euro is 2.50 Maltese Lira."

1 Euro are/is normally a singular term, isn't it?

Or is it because it's an abstract term?

please tell me the truth about this. I am for are against is, am I right?

Yea. You can't say 1 Euro are worth.

Here's a good example:

Das Bett ist hier.
Die Moebel sind hier.

See how the verb (infinitive is sein, so ist and sind) changes because of plural? That's how it is in English.

Do I have to use the word "worth" after "is"?

are my given examples both wrong because the "worth" is missing?

German translation:

1 Euro sind 2,50 Maltesische Lire?

Wir verwenden doch auch hier das Plural (sind statt ist)?!

I am really confused about this...
