The available table describes the marital status of persons 65 or older in US. It is taken from 2002 of US Bureau of the Census, which is a reliable source for graphs and such tables. So the table itself is up-to-date. In order to support comparability of the numbers the table shows the marital status of those people in five different cases. The comparability is also stressed out by giving numbers for the sexes compared with the total amount of all persons concerned. The table shows the relation between never married, married, widowed and divorced persons. There is also a category for absent spouses, which apparently is also important. To supply accurate percentages the table uses decimal numbers.
The total percentage of never married persons is approximately the same es for the male and the female part of the population. The divorced people have approx. The same development regarding the total, male and female amount of the population. The percentages for the Married-Status has big differences between the male and the female part of all people. Actually we have over three fourths of men who married but under the half of women who did that. There is also a big gap between the percentages for widowed people. The US population regarding to all people over 65 has only 13,9% widower. But the women have approx. 45% widows.
All in all we can say that we have on the one hand similarities but on the other hand irregularities in comparison of those numbers. Remarkably are the irregularities in married and widowed cases, which partly can be explained and interpreted. The US government had a very offensive foreign politics which caused many military employments. It can be a reason for the big amount of widows. In the other case of married people we can see that men actually have more marriages, which can be explained by the fact that most of the women are by nature more indulgently. In our society it is also quite difficult for such women to build a new family because of the moral and todays idea of women in such an age.
Because of todays offensive politics of the US government and the still simple arranged morals and ideals we can consequently say that in 10 or 20 years this numbers will stay the same.
