The Mafia

Beitrag von Vincent »

Hallo Leute,

ich bereite grade ein Referat über die Mafia vor. Könnte das hier bitte jemand von euch lesen und eventuell korrigieren, was Rechtschreibung und Grammatik angeht? Wäre sehr nett!

------------

The Origins of the Mafia

The Mafia has it's roots in Sicily in the end of the 18. century.
Great land owners began to leave Sicily and hired troops to protect their land. These so called Gabelluti
got more and more powerful and became the owners of the land. They forced the peasants to pay "pizzu" - a part of the harvest as protective charge.
Through violence and authority, but also through carefulness and balance the Gabelluti became so called "Mafiosi".

The state accepted the Mafia as a back-up for the fight against crime and non-conformable behaviour like robbery, prostitution and :censored:.
After some time, the Mafia achieved a higher legitimacy than the state.

Rules of the Original Mafia

- Violence: to show power, to force the completion of contracts. The more powerful a familiy is, the less it will use violence
- Knowledge is power (Omertá)
- Religiousness
- Ideal familiy life and honour
- No one may change the family
- Means of income: arms deals, drugs and kidnapping, but not prostitution and gambling
- No blood relatationship to policemen or judges
- Economic control
- Politics: patron-clients-relationship

Command Structure

Boss - Don/Godfather. Head of the family.

Underboss - Leads the capos. Becomes the new Boss if he dies or is imprisoned.

Consigliere - The advisor of the family. Keep the familiy looking as legitimate as possible.

Capo - Captains, nominated by the Underboss. Lead 4-8 soldiers.

Soldier - Full members, Italian or Sicilian. Also: "One of Us", "A Friend of Us", "Made Man"

Associate - Not seen as a member of the family, more like an errand boy. For example: drug dealers oder corrupt businessmen. Highest rank of a non-Italian.

The Mafia of Today

Today Mafia is used as a synonym for organised crime. Violent clans and secret societies who earn millions trough gambling, prostitution, blackmailing, human trafficking and drug dealing. In Italy the Mafia earns about 100 Million Euros per year. That's twice as much as Fiat. In Italy about 20.000 people count as the core of the Mafia.
