English sayings

Beitrag von raincat »

Hi, all :)

What about a thread on English sayings?

Would start by myself with

"The early bird catchs the worm"

in that case absolut identically to the German "Der frühe Vogel fängt den Wurm".

I'm totally curious about your sayings now! :freu:

I bought a book on this topic (Master your idioms) as I think idioms are very important and let your English sound much better.

You can find books here.

Have fun! :freu:
Thanks! Read it and had fun even if the thread could have been little longer ... :)

@MLS: Couldn't find anything on this link but I know there are lots of books on that issue. Anyway, thanks for recommending. :)

It's interesting to see in how many different ways the same meaning can be expressed! And amusing, too! :spin:

Hello everybody !

OK, at first I'd like say hello because I'm new here:"Hello!"

I'll try to paraphrase these idioms in Engish, cause the forum says only English talking (writing) in here :)

Nothing ventured nothing gained -> If you do not try you won't get anything !
Burning the candle at both ends -> Working too much without any pause !
The grass is always greener on the other side -> If you always think other's life is much better !
Don't cross your bridges before you come to them -> Don't worry about problems if they haven't even arrived yet !

p.s.: Very interesting and nicely kept forum !

Yours, SR

Good evening to everyone,

Alright, I've found out several new (or not, depends on your previous knowledge =) ) idioms for us all:

All that glitters is not gold - Es ist nicht alles Gold, was glänzt. (Led Zeppelin lässt grüßen)
One good turn deserves another - Eine Hand wäscht die andere.
The best advice is found on the pillow - Mal eine Nacht drüber schlafen (one of my favourites)
Soon learnt, soon forgotten - Leicht gelernt ist schnell vergessen !
...and last but not least
Birds of a feather flock together - Gleichgesinnt Menschen bleiben zusammen und mischen sich selten unter andersgesinntes Volk !

@raincat: Oh I can't tell you how beautifull it is up here, I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles....

hehe das fand ich immer schon irgendwie lustig, eine Band hat auch mal ein Lied mit selbigem Songtitel geschrieben. Allerdings heisst es da "don't piss on my neck". Die Band heisst übrigens Deah by Stereo.

Das was mir noch einfällt ist:

"to kick the bucket" = (ich hoffe ich hab das richtige in Erinnerung) aber müsste soviel wie sterben heissen. Also ungefähr mit "den Löffel abgeben" vergleichbar.
