translation question

I have a little question about the translation of a sentence.
In an app developed by me, you can click on a folder or view its contents. Next to it is the help text:

"Select a folder or a file to display the contents"
In the sense of: Select a folder or a file to display its contents

my opinion, the sentence should read correctly:
"Select a folder or file to display its content"

Can anyone tell me which set sounds better and whether the word content rather in the singular or plural should stand, orally does not matter...
