Koedukation

Beitrag von edmont »

In English, "coeducation" almost always refers to boys and girls being educated together.

Question: Thirty years ago in Germany, could "Koedukation" refer to educating people of different social classes and abilities together? Or was it as it is in English, where if someone used the word, one could assume they were referring to boys and girls being educated together?

Here's the sentence I'm working with:

Die Waldorfschule machte als "erste deutsche Gemeinschaftsschule" ernst mit der sozialen Koedukation verschiedener Volksschichten, wie sie 1918/19 vielfach angestrebt wurde.

Thank you very much for any assistance.

Koedukation is just a fancy way of saying "teaching together" but it doesn't say anything about who it refers to. That's why the German sentence needs to tell this explicitly.
