Hallo,
in dieser Aufgabe muss ich die Sätze beenden. Die dick markierten sind vorgegeben. Ich bedanke mich für eure Hilfe.
Ein Beispiel ist mir gegeben: The Phone rang while I was working in the garden.
Verstehe ich das richtig, "while" bestimmt die Zeit Past Progressive und bei "when" bleibt die Zeit in Simple Past?
1. Her brakes failed when she did the MOT.
2. He did a PhD while he was drinking a coffee.
3. There was an announcement when they saw a football match.
4. We saw a musical while we were frightening.
5. I made a mistake when I kissed her.
6. Our food was brought while we were working in the office.
7. He cut himself when he cut the carrots.
8. Bob arrived when everybody were there.

Re: Sätze beenden.
Meine Aufgabenstellung: Complete these sentences with a phrase in the past continuous.
Da habe ich wiedermal meine Aufgabenstellung verpennt.
Dann muss ich wohl bei den "when" Sätze ein -ing anhängen. Wäre das richtig?

"While" is often used in the past progressive/continuous, and "when" is often used in the simple past, yes, but that is not always the case, so don't look at that as a rule to determine if something is past continuous or simple.
1. Her brakes failed when she did the MOT.
2. He did a PhD while he was drinking coffee. (The bolded here is wrong.. you don't just "do" a PhD, but the rest of the sentence is fine if you're assuming the bold is correct.)
3. There was an announcement when they sat down for a football match. (You could rephrase this many ways, but "when they saw a football match" is describing a long period of time, multiple hours, that doesn't match up with "an announcement," which would just be a short interruption.)
4. We saw a musical while we were frightening. (I'm not sure what word you're looking for, but "frightening" is an adjective, not a verb, and makes no sense here.)
5. I made a mistake when I kissed her.
6. Our food was brought while we were working in the office.
7. He cut himself when he cut the carrots.
8. Bob arrived when everybody was there.

5. I made a mistake when I was kissing her.
7. He cut himself when he was cutting the carrots.
8. Bob arrived when everybody else was arriving there. (Hier weiß ich nicht welches Verb ich reinsetzen soll.) (again, multiple ways to rephrase this to change it to past continuous, this is just the most obvious way to me.)

Thank you Alyssea!
Is it better?
2. He did a PhD while he was working as an engineer.
4. We saw a musical while we were talking about the actors.

2. He did a PhD while he was working as an engineer.
This is a better sentence, since engineering is something that can directly relate to PhD's, but the originally bolded part is still wrong. I assume your teacher gave you it, so it just means your teacher wrote incorrectly, which does happen on occasion. Some possibilities that make grammatical sense are: "He got a PhD while..", "He earned a PhD while...", and "He did a PhD program while...". But I imagine as far as your teacher is concerned, the sentence you wrote is fine as is.
4. We saw a musical while we were talking about the actors.
This sentence is fine grammatically, but is a bit odd if you think about it. The sentence implies that you and whoever (the "we") were having a conversation about actors, and watched a musical on the side. The main thing that you were doing is talking. That's possible, but for most people watching a musical is more of a main event. Again not the best sentence starter (flipping it to be "We were talking about the actors while we saw a musical" would make a lot more sense), but it's fine if the initial bolded words were given.
