- The aftermath of the uprising established the leading role of the ANC in the anti-apartheid struggle
- After the suppression of the uprising hundreds of students fled abroad and joined the ANC
- So for the first time the organization had an influence on what is happening in South Africa
- The black unionism was established as a new force in the fight for freedom
- Their success was amazing. In 1972 only 14.000 operation related people are unionized, so 1979 already 85,000 and 1986 over one million.
International Reaction:
- The United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 392 which strongly condemned the incident and the apartheid government.
- The ANC called for international action and more economic sanctions against South Africa
Pretoria:
- Thousands of students protested against higher tuition fees in South Africa
- On October 23, the protest escalated in Pretoria
- It was the largest single student protest since the 1976 Soweto uprising
New form of Apartheid:
- The costs should be increased by 12%
- For the majority of white students it’s probably not a problem but for the majority of black students it’s a lot of money
- So We’re talking about a new form of Apartheid, a separation between those who have and those who have nothing
