In chapter 12 of the novel " A Lesson Before Dying" by Ernest Gaines which was published in 1993 , Grant goes to the Rainbow Club after visiting Jefferson in jail.
There he listens to the conversation of three old man about their black hero Jacky Robinson while one of them demonstrates Jacky's stealing bases. This leads Grant remembering the time he and the people in his quarter prayed and hoped for Joe Louis .He also thinks about" the little Irishmen" who spoke of famous Irish people and the story " Ivy Day in the Committee Room " . Later he remembers his dream about a boy crying before his execution and screaming "help me Joe Louis ".
At the end he visits Vivian at her school .
