Diary. Korrektur.

Beitrag von schinid »

Guten Tag!
Ich lerne Englisch ein Jahr. Zwar ich fühle, dass ich den text mit paar sehr groben Fehlern geschrieben habe, kann sie nich finden :(
Ich wäre sehr dankbar für eure Hilfe.

I want to tell you about today. Today was a very bad day. At school Aunt Addie accused me of that I didnt do. She thought that I left trash on the floor, but I didnt eat the walnuts! And besides I could prove it, because my walnuts were in my poket. She would not listen and beat my. Unjust. I decided for myself, that I would not be beaten by her again. It is very unpleasant to be punished for nothing. Hen Aunt Addie came home, she wanted to beat me again. I was very afraid but told her, she doesnt dare to beat me. She beat me and I began to defend. I took a knife and said, that I will kill her, if she didnt leave me. Dear Diary, believe me, I eas ready to do it! My mother and grandmother heard our fight. They were angry. I tried to explain, but they would not listen. Why doesnt my mother my to listen? Doesnt trust my? It is very insulting.

And besides, I could prove it, because my walnuts were in my pocket. She didn't listen and beat me. Unjust (That's not a real sentence). I decided for myself, that I won't get beaten would not be beaten by her again. It is very unpleasant to be punished for nothing. Hen(?) Aunt Addie came home, and she wanted to beat me again. I was very afraid but told her, (that) she doesn't dare to beat meShe beat me and I began to defend me*/myself. I took a knife and said, (that) I will kill her, if she doesn't leave me alone. Dear diary**, believe me, I was ready to do it! My mother and grandmother heard our fight. They were angry. I tried to explain, but they didn't listen. Why doesn't my mother my to listen to me? Doesn't she trust me? It is very insulting.

*Good English. But "Myself" is common nowadays.
**I agree with you that "Diary" can be written capitalized. But many English teachers disagree. I think a diary is like a friend and when you address the diary directly: capitalized. Just be aware of this and ask your English teacher how he/she wants you to write it.

Overall a very solid assignment for a beginner! You can be proud of you!

I want to give you some advice:
  • Pay attention to the apostrophes in words like doesn't, don't etc.
  • Make sure you know the difference between MY and ME. It's actually simple: You have a case system in Russian, right?! ME is MOSTLY accusitive and MY is genitive. English used to be a case system language, too (Old English). e.g. This is MY car./This car is mine/This car belongs to me.

LongBeach did a good job catching most of the mistakes, but I noticed a few things that were missed / incorrect. c:
I want to tell you about today. Today was a very bad day. At school, Aunt* Addie accused me of something that I didn't do. She thought that I had left trash on the floor, but I didn't eat the walnuts! And besides, I could prove it because my walnuts were in my pocket. She would not** listen and beat me. Unjust. I decided myself that I would not be beaten by her again. It is very unpleasant to be punished for nothing. Then Aunt Addie came home, and she wanted to beat me again. I was very afraid but told her she wouldn't dare to beat me. She beat me and I began to defend myself***. I took a knife and said I would kill her if she didn't leave me alone. Dear diary, believe me, I was ready to do it! My mother and grandmother heard our fight. They were angry. I tried to explain, but they would not** listen. Why doesn't my mother listen to me? Doesn't she trust me? It is very insulting.
*"Aunt" is being used as part of a name here ("Aunt Addie,") so it should be capitalized. If you were to say, "At school, my aunt Addie accused me ...," then "aunt" would be lowercase because it is not part of the name.
**You could say "didn't," but "wouldn't / would not" is also fine to use here, and I personally think it sounds better.
***I have never heard "I began to defend me." As far as I am aware, that is incorrect; it can only be "I began to defend myself," although maybe "me" is correct in British English? I have never seen it used there either, but it's true I'm not quite as familiar with British English and could be wrong.

No, I can confirm that "I defend me" is also incorrect to use in Britain  .

"I defend myself" is well-formed English and has been used in literature for at least 200 years.

In older English the simple pronouns are also used reflexively: as: I bought ME a car. I lay ME down to sleep. I made ME a slad. etc. (Cf. Walter K. Smart, English Grammar Review. New York 1959.) We have just discussed this phenomenon in our course “History of the English language”. It is not in use anymore and only Grammar freaks use it.
I totally agree with “had left trash…”.
Thanks for improving the correction. J

What do you think about “Dear Diary” vs. “Dear diary”?

I've seen both. I would say it just depends on whether or not you really consider your diary a friend that you're writing your thoughts to, but like you said, it's a good idea to check which version your teacher considers correct if you're writing for a school assignment because some teachers do have a preference. If you're only writing for yourself, of course, then it probably doesn't really matter which you use. :)
