Book recommendations [Between simple and difficult]

Beitrag von Tom Bombadil »

Hello everybody!

I have to improve my English for my next school. So I thought I will spend more time to read some English books. Now here appears the problem: There is just ONE English book I read so far. It was "When I was five I killed myself" from Howard Buten. I'm pretty sure it's not a rhetorical masterpiece, but I understood everything and I had no problems to follow the story.

Now here's my request: Can you recommend some English books which are in the spheres of "When I was five I killed myself"? (They could be even more difficult)

And of course, if I made some mistakes, don't pull no punches and write it down. ^^

Best regards,
Tom

Edit: Basically it doesn't matter if the books are American or British but I would prefer British books.

Hello Delfino

Thank you very much for your response. After a little while, I found a pretty obvious book I could start with: “The Hobbit or there and back again” by J.R.R. Tolkien. ^^
In connection with my nickname it’s almost a shame I forgot those works about Middle-Earth.

And thanks a lot for the second link you sent. Very interesting to check out all the classical books like “Moby Dick”, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and so on. I will take a deep dive into all these English masterpieces.

Best regards,
Tom Bombadil

The books by J.R.R. Tolkien are written very well, but you might be surprised
how many of the words you don't know are not to be found in a dictionary either
as they were created to describe this fantasy world...

The Hobbit is actually much more simple in terms of language than Tolkien's other works, it's a children's book after all.

Yeah, I would recommend The Hobbit. It's a wonderful book and much easier to read than some of Tolkien's other books like the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I actually gave up reading the Lord of the Rings because Tolkien uses way too much detail for my taste in his more advanced works, but The Hobbit was one of my absolute favorite books when I was a child; my mom would read it to me all the time. c:

Hello everybody!

Thanks a lot for all your responses. So I will start with "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien. I'm very excited to read one of my favourite adventures in the original language. I mean those words and stories are written by Tolkien exactly like there on the pages. What an impressive feeling it must be reading this book in English. :-)
