Transformation Past Tens Simple in Present Tense Simple

Hallo,
ich lese gerade den Satz:
"The same considerations obliged us to work with the communists, for at times it was they who most clearly understood the political situation."
- und versuche ihn in Present Tense Simple auszudrücken.
Mein Ansatz:
"The same considerations oblige us to work with the communists, for at times ???it is they??? who most clearly understand the political situation."
?it is they? hört sich für mich komisch an. Ist es so richtig, oder was wäre eine korrekte Formulierung?

Dein Satz ist korrekt; ich würde nichts ändern.

"It is they who ..." hört sich in der Alltagssprache etwas komisch oder gestelzt an -- Muttersprachler sagen oft "it's them who understand ..." (auch wenn das nicht ganz richtig ist), oder eigentlich eher: "they're the ones who understand ...". Es ist aber richtiges Englisch und gut in formalerer Schrift.

I agree, it is a more formal register to say: "it is they who...".

The title of your thread should read: Transformation of past tense simple into present tense simple.
