Abi Hilfe

Beitrag von FainT »

Hallo,

The text is an excerpt from the novel "A Clock Without Hands" by Carson McCollers, published in the USA in 1961. It treats the clash of two different cahracters who discuss the relevance of segregation while they eat dinner. The plot is set in a small town in the American South during the time of segregation a mid-summer day in 1961.

The two main characters, Jester and old Judge, are sitting in the dining room, after the cook opened the shutters and rang the bell as a sign to have dinner, at 2 o'clock. The house is surrounded by trees, flowers and the lawn, represented in the brightness of the sun. The author gives an image that they belong to the upper class, or at least are prosperous, since they have a personal servant.
Firstly, the atmosphere is descrribed as tranquil. Further on it obtained tensioned because of the oppositeness which arised among the two characters, the author depicts a challenge as being "plain as a loaded pistol across the table.

Danke :)
