Hello

I read in a paper this sentence recently.
"Let the transition rate of the two types of particles are (complicated formula)"

Shouldn't it be "Let the transition rate of the two types of particles be ..."?
The first one sounds wrong to me.

Ich vermute dahinter sowas wie ich aus der Mathematik in schrecklicher Erinnerung habe: x sei blablabla.

Demnach im Englischen nur etwas ausführlicher formuliert: Lass x blablabla sein -> es muss ein "be" hin.

Wieso schrecklich?
Mathematik ist doch schön .

Und auch sehr nützlich. Wenn Ingenieure mehr Ahnung von Funktionalanalysis (nicht zu verwechseln mit Analysis) hätten, könnte man in der Entwicklung immense Kosten sparen.

Da magst du wohl Recht haben, aber wieso schließt das eine immer das andere aus?
Ich bin mathematisch begabt aber ich mühe mich bei Sprachen immer ab. Dabei würd ich eigentlich gerne noch Französisch und Türkisch lernen, aber ich habe einfach keine Begabung und es dauert bei mir immer solange bis der Fortschritt kommt.

But there are only a few people who are confident in both.
To be confident in a field means for me a lot more than the school stuff.

I disagree. Confidence is not tied to knowledge but to how approachable a field is to you and in my experience that's based on the quality of your education rather than the quantity.

Interestingly, the problems with languages and mathematics are often really the same. People cannot relate to the subjects and the presentation does not do anything about that relationship.

Tiorthan, just some advice: "Speak for yourself" in written language should be used with caution, as it can easily be considered rude. Using it in spoken communication is alright (although a bit outdated) .
