informal letter

Beitrag von ibex »

Hi everyone,

I'm currently studying for my A-levels and need to revise all different kinds of writing. The easiest text type on my list is the informal letter, so I though I'd just start off with this and write one. I don't have anybody else helping me with my texts, to I'd really appreciate your help and corrections! :-)

Hi little sister,

how're things with you? I've been missing you so much. No one to tease with "little sister", no one to cheer up with a mug of hot chocolate if they're feeling a little depressed. Nobody to talk endlessly at night until a really unearthly hour... I hope you're also missing me a bit, for otherwise I'd be severely disappointed of you!
With us, things are fine. I'm doing my studies most of the time - well, at least, I'm honestly trying to do them all the time :-). There's just so much going on here. I can see you grinning - yes, nothing's changed at all since you left in November, except for you missing, of course. Shelly is keeping me busy. It's funny wandering through the streets with her and have everybody wonder whether I'm such a young mother, because - obviously! - she's too young to be my sister - or isn't she? :'-D Yesterday, we had an appointment at the dentist's. She told me she didn't need any support and would I go and wait in the waiting room? I was pretty surprised - because God knows I'm no helicopter "parent" and filling the huge hole she had must have hurt like hell. Then again, she was begging for some junk from the vending machine outside and was ever so upset when I wouldn't buy her any. Isn't it strange sometimes kids seem so grown-up and in the next breath so child-like? And yes, in case you're wondering, I bought her a Schaumrolle later, but only after she'd stopped grouching.
Mum is doing better, but I doubt she'll be able to work this year. I don't have any idea how we'll manage, but we will somehow. If you happen to win a million in the lottery, send it over.
So sis', I've been rambling on about us, but you're the one abroad! So how're you doing? Have you come to terms with your colleagues? Do you enjoy yourself? How are you getting on with Spanish food, is it very weird? Do you already feel at home with the Spanish language? If there's any difficulty with the language, you know I'll help you any time. My dear, I hope you are fine and send you all the best wishes from Dad, Mum and Shelly. People are inquiring about you all the time. By the way, love from Mike and Sue!

Take care (and reply soon, Mum and Dad have been waiting for some sign of life from you for quite some time)

Everything is well here. I'm focusing on my studies most of the time - well, at least, I'm honestly trying to focus on them all the time . There's just so much going on here. I can literally see you grinning now - yes, nothing has changed at all since you left in November, except for you missing, of course. Shelly is keeping me busy.

Hi Keswick,
Thank you very much for your correction. It makes the text sound so much smoother in some places. :-)
I've got most of it, yet there are some corrections which I don't fully understand.

To make you understand, I have to add that we have been strongly advised to use as much and as strong colloquial language as possible, that's why I abbreviated things like "How're things?" and made half sentences like "No one I can... No one to..." Are they completely inacceptable?

Is it also possible to say "focussing", ie. spell it with two "s"?

What's wrong with treating the "million" the way I did?

Yes, sorry "focussing" is spelled with two s.

I have corrected the text using the English that I would speak/write. There are a few abbreviations such as "how're" which are not wrong, however, I just would not use them. Also "no one there.." is an expression that you would not hear. You would also not hear "if I won a million in the lottery" but simply "if I won the lottery". You can use them if you so wish, they are not wrong, but they are "foreign" if you know what I mean. ;)
