first foil:
Well, hello class!
As you might see I would like to tell you something about my work for the Malteser Buxtehude.
I do it without getting paid so it´s a honorary office.
second foil: structure
First I´ll tell you something about the rescue systems in Germany and in Britain.
Afterwards I´ll tell you something about my apprenticeship.
Then I tell you something about my work for the Malteser medical service an the Malteser disaster control.
third foil: rescue systems
In Germany there are the Rettungssanitäter, the Rettungsassistent and the Notarzt.
You might ask yourself why there are german words in my presentation. That´s because there are no translation for them. You can say the Rettungssanitäter is like the english emergency medical technician but they are not the same. So I decided to use the german words, because I want to reach clarification and therefor you have to know what I mean.
Most people think that the Rettungssanitäter is more qualified than the Rettungsassistent.
But it´s exactly the other way around. The apprenticeship as a Rettungssanitäter lasts just 3 months!
I come to that point later when I tell you about my apprenticeship. To become a Rettungsassistent you have to go to school for 2 years and do one practical year in the ambulance service afterwards.
It´s called Rettungsassistent because he is the assistant of the Notarzt.
The Notarzt is the big different between these two systems.
fourd foil: the emergency doctor
Here in Hamburg we have 2 helicopters and 13 cars; in each of them is one doctor.
In London there is just 1 helicopter. And 1 car, which is used when the helicopter cant fly.
So there are 15 emergency doctors for 2 million people here in Hamburg and 1 doctor for 8.2 million people in London.
This may sound a bit horrifying, but therefore the paramedics in Britain are allowed to do more than a german Rettungsassistent. For example they are allowed to give drugs and carry out invasive procedures, which in Germany just the emergency doctors do.
fith foil: apprenticeship (school)
As I already said the apprenticeship as a Rettungssanitäter lasts 3 months.
The first 4 weeks I went to school. It was a Malteser-school in the near of Vechta.
4 weeks is a very short time to learn all these things we had to learn. For example we learn how to resuscitate a patient, as you can see at the first picture.
We learned to tap veins as well. You can see our traininarm at the second picture.
At the end of those 4 weeks we had do to do an oral, a written and a practical exam.
sixt foil: apprenticeship (hospital)
After the 4 weeks in school, I worked 4 weeks in a hospital. I did this part of my apprenticeship in the AK St. Georg here in Hamburg.
I worked in the A&E, the intensive care unit and the anaesthesia.
sevent foil: apprenticeship (ambulance service)
The last 4 weeks of my apprenticeship I worked in the ambulance service. It was a very interesting time and I would love to go back there. You never know what the problem of the next patient is und you have to think about a solution by yourself. It was great to help people who can´t help themselves, but it was very hard as well. Not just carrying the patient and the equipment in or out the third floor, even to work in shifts was not so easy. One day you have early shift (7 am – 5 pm), then nightshift (5 pm – 7 am) afterwards, early shift again.. And so on. There was no rythm. Lots of my colleagues who already worked in this business for years, had sleep problems. There is nearly no one who is doing this job till his annuity.
eight foil: Malteser medical service
Whenever there is an event where people can get hurt (sport events, demonstration) or where many people are at the same place at the same time (concerts, markets, shows..) there has to be a medical service. The medical service is there for treating people, who got hurt and to make sure that everything is save.
Vielleicht hat ja irgendjemand soviel Ausdauer... Bin natürlich auch für Absatzkorrekturen dankbar!
Liebe Grüße
