Las Vegas

Welcome to my Presentation. Today I want to tell you something about Las Vegas.

First I want to give you a short:

Introduction
History of Las Vegas and some Facts
Problems with the water demand & people who are addicted to gambling
Conclusion

I have chosen this topic because I was there last year and I was very impressed by this city.
If you hear Las Vegas you think at things like , games, big Hotels, Shows, illuminated advertising and celebrity’s.
It is really a Place where you can escape from the daily routine and just having fun. And it is like a world for itself.
But all this glitter is not gold. I mean there are also Problems in a city like Las Vegas.
The city is in the middle of the desert of Nevada its water demand is depended to the Lake Mead and to the Colorado River. The Water level is dropping and that’s a very big Problem for Vegas.
How is it Possible that in the middle of the desert emerged a city like Las Vegas? This Question brings me to the next Point.

History of Las Vegas

The first European Visitor was Raphel Rivera in 1829. he called the Place Las Vegas what is Spanish and means in English the Meadows. That’s a place with wild grass growing and spring water.
Later Las Vegas becomes a important stop for the trains between California and New Mexico.
Official founded was Las Vegas in 1905 as some Investors bought the.
In the 1930is was the foundation stone laid with the built of the Hoover-dam and the legalize of gambling in the State of Nevada
In the 1940is started Benjamin Bugsy Siegel a evolution that never stopped to th.is day with building the first Hotel which included a its called the Flamingo.

Today Las Vegas has become a world-famous tourist city. To this some key figures:

Population 583 756
Visitors almost 39,7 Mio 2012
win 8 billions
A normal Tourist is loosing 500 Dollar in average
125 Hotel 185 Motels 150 000 rooms more then in every other city in North America
Strip 7.2 km
Clime is coined by hot summers and mild winters and its sunny the hole year

With the almost 40 million tourists of course also arise problems. How I already said is the Water resource in Las Vegas a big Problem.

Water resource

Las Vegas takes its water from the Lake Mead . The water reservoir was completely filled for the last time in the year 1999 and since the water level has dropped by more than 30 meters. But experts think that the water board is saved for another 20 years. The problem is the bigpopulationgrowthand the almost 40 millions tourist a year who are using too much water. We can say there are just too much people at the wrong place.

If we compare the water consume of Las Vegas with Germany so we see the difference clearly:

Vegas 840 l p.P/day Germany 160l pP/day

So its like a joke if you see the 83-Millionen-Liter-fountains in front oft the Bellagio Hotel

(The Bellagio needs yearly over 1.7 billion l of water)

So the Visitors of the Las Vegas Strip have little reason to suspect that the region has a water problem.
Because a trip to Las Vegas should be a escape from the reality and problems like water shortage would destroy this illusion.

Gambling addiction

A second problem I want to talk about is the gambling addiction. In Vegas are living by guess 120 000 gamblers. If read some story’s from a Greek called Archie Karas
He started with 50 Dollars in just 2 years he won 40 mio dollars but at the end he lost again everything. Because he couldn’t stop playing.
Another story is from a American business man who lost over 200 mio of dollars in just one year.

The problem is the are making to less to stop his gamblers and that they don’t loos everything.

Now I am already nearly at the end of my Presentation. How we saw is Las Vegas a city where you can have very much fun and forget your daily life. But there are also Problems with the big Population growth like the water resource or the gambling addiction.

Officially Las Vegas was founded in 1905 as some Investors bought the. -- what??
In the 1930's the foundation stone of the Hoover-dam was laid and gambling was legalised in the State of Nevada
In the 1940's with building the first hotel, the Flamingo, Benjamin Bugsy Siegel started an evolution that hasn't stopped to this day.

Today Las Vegas has become a world-famous tourist city. To this some key figures:

Another story is of an American business man who lost over 200 million dollars in just one year.

Now I am already nearly at the end of my presentation. As we've seen Las Vegas is a city where you can have very much fun and forget your daily life. But there are also problems with the quick increase of the population, the water shortage or the gambling addiction. -- you haven't mentioned the growth of the population anywhere?
