"Tut mir leid!" ist Umgangssprache. Genauso wie man "Tschuldigung" statt "Entschuldigung" sagt.

"Tut mir leid!" is a slang, likewise you say "Tschuldigung" instead of "Entschuldigung".

"Tut mir leid" is not slang as such!

For example:

You are late for work, and you open the door, your boss hasn't noticed the time, looks up and you say "Es tut mir leid, dass ich zu spaet bin" (Sorry for being late), you do apologise and at the same time explain what you are apologising for.

You are late for work, you open the door and you boss looks at you, telling you off for being late. In this case you only apologise but it is not longer necessary to explain to your boss what you are apologising for as they have already told you off for being late. In this case using "Tut mir leid" is enough.


When using "Es tut mir leid" you do delivery an explanation what you're apologising for, when using "Tut mir leid" you don't.
