Erst kürzlich durfte ich feststellen, dass meine Grammatikkenntnisse schwinden.
Diesmal handelt sich sich um das Beispiel "too / also".
Kann mir bitte wer den Unterschied erklären?
Es ging in einer Klausur um Stammzellforschung:
I agree with the argument of the religious groups that embryonic stem cells are a potential human life also.
An dieser Stelle sollte ein "too" stehen, hmm, okay.
Kann man das ganze irgendwie clever umgehen, falls man sich in der Wahl unsicher ist?

Hi Azzurri,
Beide Adverben bedeuten "auch", sind aber in der Satzstellung nicht einfach austauschbar.
In der Regel steht "also" an der selben Stelle wie die Adverben der Haeufigkeit (always, often, ...) vor dem Verb.
Und "too" steht am Ende des Satzes.
Es gibt aber Ausnahmen: US Sprecher setzen "also" durchaus an das Ende eines Satzes, UK Sprecher nicht, z.B.
US: I will be going on holiday also.
UK: I will be going on holiday, too.
Macht das Sinn?

Kann ich bedenkenlos "too" oder "also" nutzen, wenn ich sie richtig eingesetzt werden?

Grundsaetzlich hast Du Recht, nur leider handelt es sich hier (wie sollte es auch anders sein) um eine Ausnahme.
"also" steht vor dem Verb, aber NACH "to be". Der Satz muss also lauten:
I agree with the argument of the religious groups that embryonic stem cellsare alsoa potential human life ?

I have a little issue with the article in "a potential human life". When used with the article "a life" usually refers to the lifespan (or being alive) of one single being. Unless you tried to express that a stem cell is a being all by itself, the article should be dropped.
On a different note, the word order in "are also ..." is by no means an exception. It only seems an exception if you define it by way of its position relative to the verb. However, these adverbs are positioned following two rules:
- they come before the core of the predicate
- they come first behind the verb.
If the two rules conflict, the first takes precedence.
The verb "to be" (unless meaning "to exist") is always an auxialiary, and thus never part of the core of the predicate.

Also stehen Häufigkeitsverben aller Art immer nach "to be" bzw. Hilfsverben, aber vor Vollverben, um das Thema abzuschließen?

Ich werde es mir merken und hoffentlich auch umsetzen können.
In der Eile mache ich leider oft Fehler, wo man am Ende sich dann nur unnötig ärgert.
